to think they're trying to kill me off?? (Office thermostat thread)

I work in a sealed office, can't open the windows. Granted I've felt a little warmer since I've been pregnant but really, is there any need for the thermostat to be set to twenty five degrees? I have been disgustingly hot all day. I took off my cardigan, all I had on my top half was a (not very appropriate for the office) vest top. I've been sipping cold water all day. I've been melting.

Towards the end of the day I had brutal heartburn which vanished in my lovely cool car heading home. There is no need to set the temperature to 25 degrees, unless as I said, my colleagues are actually trying to do me in and are boiling me to death.

That's ridiculously hot.

Max of 21 would do it.

MartinSheensTeeth · 28/01/2014 17:25

Unless it's under lock and key it's fair game Grin

MartinSheensTeeth · 28/01/2014 17:26

How high up the wall is it? Can you drop something and sneakily change it? Can you shout "over there" and do it?

candycoatedwaterdrops · 28/01/2014 17:29

Stroll into the office in your bikini, that'll tell 'em!

MyNameIsWinkly · 28/01/2014 17:30

Fucking hell candy, nobody deserves that!! Grin

Winkly I am suffering the same at my office! Air con units blasting hot fusty air into our sealed open plan. I posted a thread in pregnancy about this last week because I was ready to kill two of my colleagues who moan that they are cold, both come from hot countries and both wearing short fucking sleeves or thin shirts - with jumpers/cardis sitting on the back of their chairs! I was sitting in a summer t-shirt - literally cant remove any more clothing!
Not sure what the temp is but when you walk into our office it is literally like walking into a sauna.

Ive had to go and stand outside for 10 mins to cool down (am 31 weeks pregnant) and am actually leaving early for mat leave partly because I can't hack it any more!

LittleWhiteWolf · 28/01/2014 17:52

You should have had a risk assessment for your work now that you're pregnant and temperature should come into it. Unless that's only a civil service thing; I definitely remember having a few of these during both of my pregnancies. Have you had this?

DramaAlpaca · 28/01/2014 17:56

You lucky people with nice warm offices. Ours is freezing. The heating doesn't work boss too mean to put it on and if you plug an electric heater in it blows the computer server apparently so we are left working in arctic conditions. Complaining doesn't work, we're just told to wear our thermals Confused

We are moving premises soon & are hoping for tropical conditions Smile

WooWooOwl · 28/01/2014 18:00

25 degrees is a comfortable temperature for many people, and if the majority of people in your office are happy with it, then there's not much you can do.

You will be feeling warmer than you usually would because you're pregnant, but that's not a reason to make everyone else cold.

nennypops · 28/01/2014 18:04

I would definitely find 25 degrees too hot, and I'm not pregnant. I must say I can't see why the heat lovers can't just put on a jumper.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 28/01/2014 18:22

25 degrees is too hot for an office which does get warmer with all the computers and various other technological equipment that lives in officers.

Cold people can layer up, it's not considered social acceptable to sit in your undies in the office. In my office, the "it's ffffreezing" whingers are always the ones inappropriately dressed for the season!

WooWooOwl · 28/01/2014 18:31

Putting a jumper on doesn't help the bottom half of a person, or their hands. Are people supposed to wear two pairs of trousers and gloves to sit in the office as well?

In any office with lots of people there will be some that are warmer than others and some that are colder than others. Neither group has more right to a temperature they want than the other. The only way to deal with it is to go with the majority.

maddening · 28/01/2014 18:40

There's a woman at my place keeps turning it up to 30¤ it is roasting - even then she says she is cold - never met anyone as nesh!

Wincher · 28/01/2014 18:49

I have recently had to wait for 1.5 hours each time (bloody drop in clinic) in a medical waiting room with the thermostat on 29 degrees. Not fun at all. Our heating at home is on 19 degrees which is perfect.

DawnOfTheDee · 28/01/2014 18:51

Iirc average indoor room temp in this country is between 18 and 21 degrees so 25 is definitely on the warm side to say the least.

If you know you get cold you don't need to wear 2 pairs of trousers but you could wear tights underneath - keep you nice and toasty no? Alternative is people in their undies.....

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 28/01/2014 18:51

I would be at home, mine is always up full whack when I am at home, leave it on 18 when out.

RandyRudolf · 28/01/2014 18:54

Our thermostat switches are white with a black line which points to the temp. If yours are the same I recommend you tipex out the black line, turn the dial down and draw in a new black line with a marker pen. When people glance at it, it will look like it's on full blast. Not that I've ever done this myself of course Wink

Monetbyhimself · 28/01/2014 18:59

I'd find 25' unbearable. Our communal work spaces seem ti be inhabited by 2 types of people- radiators ON or OFF. Each one has an individual thermostat. The poor things must be dizzy!

FrankelInFoal · 28/01/2014 19:07

Winks you poor thing. Do you gave an HR department you can talk to? 25 degrees is far too hot for an office and those of you have it the same or higher at home must have horrendous heating bills Shock

candycoatedwaterdrops · 28/01/2014 19:26

Woo If you need 2 pairs of trousers when the thermostat is 20 odd, then you surely can't expect the rest of the world to accommodate you because that's abnormally cold. And I did say that my office whingers are underdressed so a bit of selective reading there. Wink Although, they have nothing to whinge about; it's always hot and the thermostat is fucked.

Nombrechanger · 28/01/2014 20:11

I'm in charge of the thermostat in my workplace. What I day goes.

Nombrechanger · 28/01/2014 20:11

Say

brettgirl2 · 28/01/2014 20:14

Awful. We were taken over by a big corporate and the only advantage is the mad office manager (who rumour has it keeps her house thermastat at 28) has been reined in.

Wear a summer dress is my only advice.

SnookyPooky · 28/01/2014 20:18

Winkly yes 30! It's a small office but draughty, honestly I'm still not warm enough and sit all day in my coat and scarf. Only me in there so the ones that complain are visitors and my boss.

Oubliette0292 · 28/01/2014 20:23

I don't know what our office thermostat is set at, but before Christmas I had to complain because the vent above my desk was blowing out air at 43C. Was totally tropical uncomfortably warm.
