to think that £300 is a lot for a carpet?

OH bought a carpet today for the front bedroom. We've just bought our first house and are renovating room by room as we live there.
I'm not a carpet expert AT ALL so have no idea if this was a good deal.
The room will be our main bedroom so our budget is slightly higher over that of the study and spare room.
It is 4m x 4m.
The carpet is very strong loopy weavey thing (technical terms) and is 100% pure wool.
It was a remenant, was knocked down with haggling and includes fitting and premium underlay.
Have we just been fleeced?

Sounds ok to me

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/01/2014 17:57

No, not for 100% wool.

That is under £19 per square metre - which considering you have underlay and fitting included is a good deal.

If you've just bought your first place then there is no reason why you should know how much things cost, but if you reckon on everything being more expensive than you think it will then you won't go far wrong Grin

Splatt34 · 27/01/2014 17:58

Not at all. stairs, hall and 3 bedrooms cost us £1500 5 years ago.

AnyFucker · 27/01/2014 17:58

That sounds ok to me

16 square metres fitted for £300 sounds fine. It really depends on the quality of the carpet though. If it's cheap stuff he got fleeced, if it's pricey stuff he got a great deal.

Lj8893 · 27/01/2014 18:00

Sounds good to me.

Our carpet cost just over £600 (including fitting, underlay etc) for 2 rooms and hallway but its not 100% wool.

morethanpotatoprints · 27/01/2014 18:00

OMG that is really cheap OP. Had it not been a remnant it would have been much more.
We have a large house and the last wool carpet we bought was £700.
It will certainly last and they clean up lovely. (with luke warm water, not hot) Grin

For 100% wool, underlay and fitting you've got a bargain

Objection · 27/01/2014 18:01

That's good news. its a remenant and was in a separate warehouse bit from the shop. It felt really high quality (much better than the previous one from a different shop apparently)

Including fitting and underlay that sounds like a bargain to me!

Objection · 27/01/2014 18:04

Thank god for that. I have no idea how much carpet costs but was worried that we'd been ripped off. Though I now feel very Shock for carpetting the rest of the upstairs!

Bargain! Our bedroom and stairs (loft room) cost £750 including underlay and fitting for 100% wool. It was the best price in our town.

ScooseIsLoose · 27/01/2014 18:20

Bargain dd's bedroom cost that and hers is only a box room

Heathcliff27 · 27/01/2014 18:22

I would say you've got a bargain there

ShatnersBassoon · 27/01/2014 18:23

That's a great price. Your OH is obviously a good bargain hunter.

ThoughtFox · 27/01/2014 18:32

Good for him - that's a bargain!

RhondaJean · 27/01/2014 18:34

Bloody hell that's fab for pure wool with fitting etc. you CAN definitely get carpet cheaper but it's a lot poorer quality, like others say that's a bargain you've got there.

dorathedestroyer · 27/01/2014 19:38

Bargain, especially if you've got decent underlay too - the fitters who did our upstairs bedrooms (3, for £1600!) said good quality underlay is what makes the biggest difference.
