To not want these towels to wash?

muddyprints · 27/01/2014 16:01

Dp is in a tea school at work, someone has left and dp has volunteered to take this on so he collects the money and provides the tea coffee milk and sugar. No problem.
Friday he came home with 7 towels from work that are really dirty and stained and said they need washing as he has took on washing as we'll.
I'm a sahm and do all washing, I know it's only bunging them in washer and dp could easily do that.
But we don't have a tumble dryer and in winter I struggle to get things dry. I do 4 or 5 loads of clothes a week, 2 of sheets and 1 of towels at least already and there are Always 2 aires of clothes in house this time of year.
I do not need another load of towels a week to wash, dp says no problem he will wash them but they will still hog an airer for 2 days and get in my way. Also I had to do them on a hotter longer wash than I normally use to get them clean today.
Aibu to not want to do hem in winter. In summer everything is line dried so no problem.

Get your washing done and the airers full then tell dh to do the towels. It sounds like he needs to experience tge inconvenience to understand. He'll soon find someone else.

DetentionExtension · 27/01/2014 16:21

7 tea towels? I can't imagine that as a load? I would just bung them in with whatever I'm doing and stock them on a radiator. How on earth do you get towels and sheets dry on aires? I always did a run of 3 washes at home then took a massive dryer at the launderette for an hour or so - is that an option?

FunkyBoldRibena · 27/01/2014 16:23

Why are you washing them, if he has taken this on then he has taken this on, not you. Don't bloody touch them.

UnicornsNotRiddenByGrownUps · 27/01/2014 16:29

Wow it's 7 towels... I would get a grip..

rookiemater · 27/01/2014 16:39

Meh - I'd adopt a tactic used by males for hundreds of years.

Generally I'd forget to do them, or I'd just do them on your normal wash "Oh gosh DH look they haven't come up clean", then forget to do them on a hotter heat the next week.

Then if they do manage to get washed, put them in a basket when damp "because there isn't enough space to dry them" then forget - DH will remember soon enough when they aren't available to take in.

Then he will either take it over himself, or ensure that someone else volunteers for next term.

AnythingNotEverything · 27/01/2014 16:43

You should suggest he puts them in overnight and dries them on a radiator at the office.

But this really isn't your problem.

PenguinsDontEatKale · 27/01/2014 16:44

Well, I wouldn't get involved in doing them - his volunteering, his job. But 7 tea towels is hardly a load is it?

muddyprints · 27/01/2014 16:51

No it isn't a load, but my towels already fill a load and a couple of kids towels go in with kids sheets. So these towels will be going in on their own at a hotter wash. Dp will happily bung them in and put them on an airer and then I will be stuck for family washing.
Sheets are hung over airers with gaps between and they dry in two days.
I am going to ask him to find someone to do them in winter and I will do them in summer.

I would not put filthy tea towels in with anything else.

softlysoftly · 27/01/2014 16:54

I think anythings suggestion is the one to go with, his responsibility and he isn't to take up your drier.

Do your sheets not have that musty too long to dry smell if they take 2 days?

2rebecca · 27/01/2014 16:54

If he's volunteered then it's his problem. i'd ignore the tea-towels/ towels. if I took on washing stuff I wouldn't expect my husband to become involved with it.

FunkyBoldRibena · 27/01/2014 16:57

Then move them off the drier when you need it.

sonlypuppyfat · 27/01/2014 16:57

Buy a tumble dryer how on earth people manage without one is beyond me. It must be like living at Widow Twankys with all this washing hanging about.

DidoTheDodo · 27/01/2014 17:00

Tell him to delegate that particular responsibility to someone else. if he gives you the towels put them in the bin. Every time. He'll soon learn. (As will his entitled workmates, who are probably sniggering behind his back at having found such a sucker)

(PS I don't have a tumble drier or room for one. I have a Sheila Maid)

muddyprints · 27/01/2014 17:01

No they don't smell musty. I will ignore them in future and see what he does.

LEMmingaround · 27/01/2014 17:05

What is a sheila maid

DangerousBeanz · 27/01/2014 17:06

I'd get a dryer... I couldn't survive without mine. Tell him you'll happily do the washing if he gets you a condenser dryer, Ours is worth it's weight in gold. I bought mine when it was double vouchers from tesco direct.

ZenNudist · 27/01/2014 17:06

Just don't do them. If he asks say do it yourself. And whilst he's at it he can put some of the other washing on, why the hell do you do all the washing? Sahm aside you have plenty to do.

Sounds like you've let washing take over your life. Time to invest in a washer dryer if you don't have space for a separate dryer.

asandwichshort · 27/01/2014 17:06

Work tea towels tend to be absolutely M.I.N.G.I.N.G - Have steeped in domestos, tried vanish exta hygiene and boiled the b*ggers to death but they still do not appear to be clean!! Suggest he suggests a rota at work to take them home - with him NOT being on the rota as he does the money collection and buying - only fair!

DidoTheDodo · 27/01/2014 17:07

It's a rack and pulley system that goes up to the ceiling (where the warm air is) that you hang your washing on to dry or air. Old fashioned and fabulous.

notso · 27/01/2014 17:07

It wouldn't really bother me they can be put in with other stuff. I don't understand why you wouldn't put dirty things in with other dirty things Confused
If it really bothers you then,
Get DH to do it and dry them at work,
Tell him to buy more tea towels they are obviously being over used then they won't be so manky,
Buy a tumble dryer.

DidoTheDodo · 27/01/2014 17:08

Or put them in with pants and floorcloths and watch while they all get D & V.

MrsKoala · 27/01/2014 17:09

YANBU i am in washing hell atm. Every single extra item gives me the rage. We have no tumble dryer and live in a small flat. We have 2 airers and one loads fills them and it takes 2 days to dry. I spend my life washing then moving washing around the flat on and off airers and radiators. And yes it IS like widow twankys laundry here. I hate it so much. But we can't get a tumble dryer. We rent and the flat is tiny. There is nowhere to put one or be able to vent it. Often my clothes smell damp before they are even dry and need to be washed again.

Don't do them. Don't let them take up your precious drying space!

FunkyBoldRibena · 27/01/2014 17:10

I have a Shelia in the bathroom - above the rads [we have very high ceilings] It's marvelous.

IamInvisible · 27/01/2014 17:13

I wouldn't be getting my knickers in a twist over 7 tea towels, tbh. I can not understand how tea towels take 2 days to dry in a heated house either.
