appropriate age for watching Jurassic Park

Hi

At what age do you think a child can watch Jurassic Park? DS is 6 in March. We went to the Natural History Museum at the weekend and he saw a 10 second clip and said he'd like to watch it, but I remember it being really scary. DH thinks it's probably fine. Commonsensemedia.org says 12 which seems quite old. I have strong reservations! Maybe night at the museum would be better?

Totally depends on the child really. DS watched it at 4-5 and loved it, DD is scared easily though she's a couple of years older.

But also - some things are scarier to us (the concepts etc), than to children IYKWIM.

Night at the Museum was also a big hit with them both.

I have it on dvd and it is a PG rating

farewellfigure · 27/01/2014 14:21

He hasn't seen any properly scary movies yet (Harry Potter for example), but he has seen the original star wars films. I don't like him watching anything too violent but I guess dinosaur violence is obviously made-up so not as bad as someone punching someone else iyswim.

but depends on your child, how easdly scared they are?

FlyAwayToMalibu · 27/01/2014 14:22

It's a PG.

Hoppinggreen · 27/01/2014 14:23

My 5 year old has seen it.

RosieLig · 27/01/2014 14:24

It's pretty scary! I'd say 8/9 at least.

littleredsquirrel · 27/01/2014 14:25

Its PG13 in the US - "intense science fiction terror" DS1 hasn't watched it yet at nearly 9.

6 is way too young in my view

ThatBloodyWoman · 27/01/2014 14:25

Think my youngest was about four.
Loved it.

Every child in the entire universe loves the bit where the man is on the loo.

monkeyfacegrace · 27/01/2014 14:26

Mine watched it at 3/4.
Its ace.

RosieLig · 27/01/2014 14:26

Remember that scene in the science lab with the velociraptors?! Grin

poopooheadwillyfatface · 27/01/2014 14:28

I saw it as an adult, with a random child. I was more scared than them and couldn't believe it was only a PG.

I'm braver these days. DS has watched it so many times I had to delete it off the recorder box thingy.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 27/01/2014 14:29

My youngest ds watched it when he was 6, hes 8 now and still loves it.
My 11 y.o ds hates it and wont watch it!
Depends on the child.
The toilet scene is my favourite!

MoreSkyThanWeNeed · 27/01/2014 14:29

My brother was dinosaur mad when it came out and saw it aged 4. Loved it.
Think it depends on the child. Because my brother knew everything about dinosaurs, he didn't get upset at them eating each other/people. It was nothing compared to what he made his toy dinosaurs do.

PandaNot · 27/01/2014 14:32

My ds was 6 I think and my dd was 4. She's not scared by anything and was quite taken with the pretty blue dinosaur. So much so that she told the staff at nursery all about it and they checked with me that I knew she had seen it! Ds wasn't bothered by it at all either and he's much more sensitive than dd.

MmeMorrible · 27/01/2014 14:33

My two (DD 11 & DS 6) didn't like it & we turned it off. They both found it much scarier than Harry Potter, Percy Jackson etc. DD is usually pretty bomb proof with movies and has recently seen the Hunger Games without turning a hair. I think it's because the tension is so ratcheted up, making a lot of the fear psychological and they aren't used to that.

Hoppinggreen · 27/01/2014 14:35

Feel a bit guilty now but I don't usually let him watch very scary stuff and he wasn't affected in the slightest by it

fatballerina · 27/01/2014 14:36

I think I was about 10 when I saw it in the cinema (giving away my age here!)-loved it!

MerryMarigold · 27/01/2014 14:37

We've seen bits. Lots of youtube clips, including the bit of the man on the toilet. I think my youngest were about 4. I think the kitchen scene is the most scary, and not sure they have seen that. I think 6 would be fine, but it depends how sensitive your child is. Dd would probably run out of the room at intervals Grin. They are pretty good at regulating.

Proudmummytodc2 · 27/01/2014 14:38

My wee boy is 3 in Aprils d he's seen it loads ofttimes get mega excited about it he's dinosaur mad he's not scared at all once it finishes he's always asking for it again lol x

MerryMarigold · 27/01/2014 14:39

Oh, and some Dinosaur ideas:

Ds2 (5) was super into Dinos and loves:

  • Planet Dinosaur
  • Walking with Dinosaurs
  • Prehistoric park

I think he's seen so much dinosaur stuff, he is pretty immune to J Park.

ceebie · 27/01/2014 14:42

Depends on child. Mine is 4 and is confident in real life but a complete wuss when it comes to TV - scared of Scooby Doo, the old men in the bank in Mary Poppins, etc. We are still very much in CBeebies territory where there is not an ounce of tension.

ProfondoRosso · 27/01/2014 14:43

I saw it when it came out, and I was 7.

wonderingsoul · 27/01/2014 14:47
