dd has gone for a music scholarship which went as well as it could have (audition, went really well in that she thinks she did well) and she either gets offered one or she doesn't as she did as well as she could however she has to also pass the academic exam which was today. we don't push so she wasn't tutored (unlike most of the other kids sitting it) and again, as long as she had done her best we were happy with that.

i did buy her a bond verbal reasoning book as vr is different to the usual stuff she does at school and thought it good she was made familiiar with it. she barely did much from the book and told me she (quote) found it easy. to get to the point (sorry..) she has just come back form the exam and told me she found the vr really hard. i am pissed off as she did fuck all in preparation re vr as i went along with the fact she told me she found it easy (didn't push her to go through the vr book).

dh is pissed off with me, thinks i am being unreasonable as (quote) she did her best, which on the day i am sure she did. however, i am pissed off with him as i think he has shown bugger all interest in this whole process and that (yeah right..) if she was offered a music scholarship she wouldn't get in if she had failed the entrance exam.

i don't like feeling pissed off about this but i am. tbh i doubt she would get a scholarship, she is of the standard but again, up against seriously pushed kids of which she ain't but it is the principle. i think she would have found vr a little easier had she of spent some time on the bond book i bought her. what do you lot think..

My daughter got a music scholarship.
She too had to under go all the entrance exams. She was very weak on maths and so we asked a friend who was a primary school teacher to give her some help with this (paid obviously) in order to boost her confidence really... as we desperately didn't want her to worry about it in any way.
Naturally when she did the exams (maths, English and VR) she did her best on the day. That was all we asked.
She was indeed offered the scholarship (flute) but they remarked how poor her maths attainment was, and we were asked to bring her to chat to the Head of Maths. He told her she would get all the help she needed to achieve ultimately a C in GCSE. which she did, in fact. Just.
It's true selective schools have a standard to uphold, but the other thing to consider is the competition from other musicians. These kids have to be seriously good, and there are no shortage of them chasing scholarships.
I hope things work out well for you, whichever way it goes. The most important thing is that your daughter is confident and happy and believes in herself.

Sounds like she did a lot of verbal reasoning actually... Did you check her marks or did she?

We bought a vr book for ds but only did a few.. Two actually, of the age 11 to 12 . We ran out of time as we suddenly had a deadline for the exam the school offered. And I was at work the weekend before so was not home so couldn't really be helped.
I did mark them though.
Tbh as long as you've seen them before is the main thing as they are different from normal work.

she marked herself then showed me her markings/the chart she coloured in at the back after. she usually got something like 18/20. they were ten minute timed tests. she didn't do them every week though. more when i thought of it every few weeks which i know now wasn't anywhere near enough. at the time i thought i was being pretty good as she did seem to be scoring well but yes, i didn't know the importance of speed/technique etc. i seem alot calmer about it now. she works hard at school and enjoys it so i would like to think she would be happy at any of the schools. at least if she doesn't get in we don't have to stress about finding the money each term Smile. even if she got offered ie a 10% scholarship it wouldn't make enough of a difference for us to be able to send her there Sad which is a bummer as these two schools have really good music depts which she would love to bits

It may simply be that the vr in the exam were a bit tougher than the book ones.. Don't worry it all sounds fine
