Posting here for traffic, sorry.

My dd normally poos about 5 times a day, but hasn't pooed in the last 24 hours. She's in a lot of pain and discomfort with it, and I can feel all the tension in her tummy.

I've tried massaging her stomach, I've pushed down on it, I've carried her so my hand pushes on it, I've bicycled her legs etc but nothing is working.

Any suggestions?! She has slept a grand total of
20 minutes today and is due to go to bed soon, but she's unhappy lying down so I'd really rather get this poo out!

Take her to a doctor. My son (bf) at that age became constipated. GP suggested lactulose and pessaries, worked temporarily. His utterly brilliant nanny wasn't convinced doctor knew what he was talking about (and to his credit he listened to what this girl just in her twenties said ) We went to a&e and discovered there was actually an issue with the anal canal. It was as if there was a "shelf" that poo was building up on. The a&e doctor took about 30 seconds to agree with our nanny's assessment of misdiagnosis and to spot the real problem.

A few months after we were there a tv documentary about the Sick Kids hospital in Edinburgh featured a similar case .Apparently not uncommon, very easy to treat but must be treated.

mmbacon my breastfeed son was constipated. The reason was a physical issue which even the magic properties of breast milk would not have cured. A&E at Sick Kids diagnosed it as not uncommon, easily remedied and potentially fatal if not.So please don't be so glib about it must be ok if bf.

Juniper - you mention she has silent reflux. Is she taking gaviscon as this tends to bung them up and it is recommended to give a little cooled water to counteract this. We found that not giving DS gaviscon with every feed helped.

Glad it has all..ahem...worked itself out! My son only experienced this a couple of times, but we used the suppositories quicker after the first time and it definitely avoided the build up which had made him feel quite so sad. Unfortunately he is still a 4-6 times a day boy, so I am still envious of my friends' kids who go once like clockwork and are then done for the day!

She hasn't just had her second rotavirus vaccine has she? I ask because the first dose didn't have much affect on mine, but the second really threw his digestion for a loop - went from 3 poos a day to a 2 day wait after the second dose, with unbelievably stinky wind for a good 2 weeks, and still unpredictable and unsettled poos (of a new, greenish colour and thicker consistency) a month later (currently grumpy having gone a day and a half without movement)

It could be a co-incidence, but DS1 didn't have the rotavirus vaccine and never went through this change, and it was immediately following the doses and with no other dietary monkeying about so it is suspicious.
