To be pretty much peed off with HR for ruining my career chances

I have gone for a promotion at work twice now. The first time, I heard nothing and was really disappointed but I persevered with strengthening my experience in the area I want to get into. Just over a year later, I have lots more experience and I still heard nothing. I was very frustrated, so I asked HR for feedback and they told me they didn't receive either application - they admitted it was their fault not mine.

Today, a few days later, they have told me I can still be interviewed so long as I do it on Tuesday. It is an assessment that takes half the day. I have Tuesdays off and my boyfriend is at work that day so I have no child care. My usual nursery say they have no room (my little one only goes there Wednesday and Thursday usually) and there is no one else. My parents are no longer with us and my boyfriend's live miles away. I have to take the toddler to a medical appointment that day as well as care for him all day. We have tried very hard to arrange childcare but no one can help at this late notice. HR said I either do the interview on Tuesday or not at all - even though I explained all this, they just don't care.

I am so angry because I really, really want this promotion. I don't know what to do. What would you do? File a complaint? It is so frustrating and unfair.

Your ILs can't bring the nephew they look after to you for one day? I know travelling with small children isn't fun but...if my DIL was after a promotion and had this situation I'd do it, this is a one off. I'd really push for them to help. Can one of them cope with your nephew and one of them come?

JeanSeberg · 24/01/2014 17:49

Of course he can't phone a sickie but I'm questioning working for this company at more senior level if this is how they carry on

Walkacrossthesand · 24/01/2014 17:57

Please don't send your DC to a (planned) appointment with someone that doesn't know him well! Little children aren't terribly good at explaining what's wrong with them/what their mum is worried about, and the doctor can't divine what the problem is by magic/telepathy. Far better to cancel if a parent/very involved grandparent can't take them.

IrisWildthyme · 24/01/2014 18:00

I think it's worth it to pay through the nose for emergency childcare for the sake of being able to do the interview - for one thing it will demonstrate to HR that you are really serious about the job if you make it work one way or another. I would pay the premium to join a site like childcare.co.uk or findababysitter.com at the enhanced level that means you can send direct messages - you are supposed to sign up for a monthly payment but can presumably just cancel after Tuesday.

pussycatdoll · 24/01/2014 18:06

I'd take the kids to the inlaws on Sunday & pick them up on wednesday
Or get them to visit & ask nephews parents to have him this once
If you really want to go to the interview you will find a way

pussycatdoll · 24/01/2014 18:07

Although are you sure you want the job?
Doesn't sound a great place to work tbh

Marylou62 · 24/01/2014 18:23

This is a horrible situation and I really feel for you. I really mean this, that if you were near me I would babysit you for free. (I'm nanny). Hopefully some one nearer might help. I agree to go back to nursery and state your case. Good Luck.

redandyellowbits · 24/01/2014 18:28

Where in Brum are you? I know of a childminder close to city centre who might be able to help.

bettybetty1983 · 24/01/2014 18:31

OK, so... we have a plan! We're off to visit the in-laws on Sunday and have a nice day there with them and boyfriend's sister. Then our son will stay there until Tuesday afternoon, when I will drive down to fetch him back after the interview. Thanks for the brainwave. They're too old to drive this far for the day themselves and this feels like the best solution.

I cancelled the appointment and noted the sitting sites. Thanks! Got half way through registering for one then had this plan.

I'd better not have to go to a second interview at the last min now!! ;)

It has made me have doubts about the company now though but I could do with the job.

Glad you have a solution, and much less stress for you knowing DS is with his GPs.

Good luck with the interview!

I have to say, I think your boyfriend could do with a new job too. I thought our place was strict, but his sounds a nightmare!
