Asbestos Tiles/Move help

Bit long, sorry.

Basic facts are my mum is moving to new house under government scheme. When she signed up for it they mentioned that the floor tiles have asbestos in them and so she cannot have them taken up or ‘hack into them’, fine she plans to lay carpet anyway. Some of the tiles must have been damaged as you can see where they have been cemented over them round the edges of the rooms, however I noticed one room was not done and the tiles are badly damaged and broken in some places, seems like this room has been missed. I mentioned to mum about calling them to ask about this being done but she doesn’t want to, thinks it is ‘making a fuss’ and it is fine really they were just ticking a legal box in telling her.

I had offered (before this) to go and clean and paint the house for her before she moves but I have said I am not happy doing this room without the work being done, she thinks I’m being awkward and worrying about nothing. She suggested I get some polyfiller and do it if I’m that bothered!
I also think the carpet fitters have a right to know especially in the room with the broken tiles.

So AIBU to have said I don’t feel comfortable doing the work with the tiles like that, as she says I’m being ridiculous?

You are definitely not being ridiculous. Who are 'they'? Landlords, council? You should certainly be looking for advice on asbestos handling if you're not sure. Ticking legal boxes won't protect anyone from asbestos-related illnesses later.

Presumably they're Marley tiles, which are present in loads of properties, although as you rightly say, they do contain low level asbestos. I would talk to the carpet fitter (who I would imagine would have come across them loads of times), and ask him to screed over the damage before fitting the new carpet.

AllThoseDirtyWords · 23/01/2014 14:41

They are landlords but a large organisation (being a little vague so not to myself).

Aj, thank you a good idea. The carpet fitter could do it but I just do not understand why she will not talk to the landlords to have the work done for free.

I agree with you - I'd be straight on to the landlord, but I know my DM and if she digs her heels in, there's no reasoning! Grin

AllThoseDirtyWords · 23/01/2014 14:48

I know! She is meant to be downsizing but the amount she has marked up to move you wouldn't think it!

I am desperately trying not to have to many opinion’s Blush

If it makes you feel better, the asbestos in such tiles is usually well sealed in - so is a very low risk

Sorry, didn't read your post properly
If the floor needs work, I would definitely raise it with the landlord and/or make any fitter aware. If any work is done i.e. cutting/sanding - fibres can be released in to the air. You would want that dealt with safely. It may be worth testing what kind of asbestos is in the tiles - some kinds are more risky than others. However as the floor is damaged, I think the landlords really need to sort it out

Thank you.

I think they just need to be screed over (new word for me from aj). I will see if I can convince her to call one more time, if not I think her hand may well be forced by the carpet fitter.
