to want Blood Oranges to be called Blood Oranges?

Yum yum, blood orange season at the moment - one of my favourite fruits & the local greengrocers has them advertised as exactly that: Blood Oranges. Not so the local supermarkets, oh no - Ruby Oranges if you please. Apparently people don't like the term "blood" FFS & it puts them off buying them. It's a vegetable - well, a fruit, but you know what I mean - vegetable matter. How could it possibly have blood in it??

I love blood oranges too. I found some in a local shop last weekend and they were lovely - beautifully sharp.

That brings me onto another gripe - why do supermarkets insist on saying that all orange-coloured citrus fruit are 'sweet and juicy'? I want them to be sweet, sharp and juicy! If they're just sweet what's the point? Do they think people will be put off by the concept of having something a little teeny bit acidic?

are they not sanguinellos? or is that a specific type of blood orange?

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 23/01/2014 23:09

Sanguinellos are the Spanish variety, sanguine=blood.
I want one so much my mouth is watering.

I call them blood oranges but actually, if renaming them means more people eat them, that's good, isn't it?

My dd is very squeamish and I thought it would put her off so told her it was a ruby orange, but she took one look and said "ew it looks like it has blood in it."
