Please look at this. I am not preaching vegetarianism or vegan in the slightest, but this is truly horrific. I think it is so important that we know where our food comes from. I appreciate that many of you will already be aware, and are making your own informed choices, but in case you are not aware, or are curious, then please take a look. It is upsetting (I warn you of that in advance), but educational and important. Please sign the petition.

"Try rice/almond/soya milk...you won't tell the difference."

I have, and I can.

That said, I am very fortunate to live in a rural area and buy meat, free range chicken and free range eggs that have been produced (and slaughtered) locally. We have loads of farm shops and butchers that makes it easy for me to do so. We have several meat free days a week and I won't buy imported meat at all, and if I can't get to the butcher/farm shop we will have a meat free meal instead. When we eat out in local pubs they have local produce on the menu.

I do what I can, but I refuse to watch the video on that link.

face cream, cosmetics, shoes, soap, garden fertiliser - I could go on and on with a list of products that are all by products of the meat industry. if you use/buy any of these then the only reason you can is because of the meat industry. I have worked in a slaughterhouse. I have no problem with eating meat at all, or using make up or wearing leather shoes. you cant pick and choose. if you don't agree with it then give up all the stuff that are cheaply available because they are by products. if you eat meat then choose local, traceable and high welfare standards. it means its more expensive and you eat less of it which is no bad thing.

BohemianGirl - £1.29 for soya milk (presumably per litre)? You can pay that much, but prices start at around 60p per litre for supermarket own brand - half your quoted price.

Please explain the "cruelty" that you think you see?
You say your dairy cows are currently in sheds for the winter. Do they spend any time each day outside, and if so, for how long? What is the life expectancy of your dairy cows (vs natural life expectancy, of say, up to around 20 years)?

This is just not true. None of those items have to contain by-products of the meat industry. And I don't believe it's up to you - or anyone else - to tell other people where they should draw the line in terms of putting ethics into practice.

I think slaughterhouse is a very emotive word to use,if we used abattoir would people be as sensitive?

I worked in a couple and I'm sorry but you can't tar all abattoirs with the same brush, yes some will be awful and have low animal welfare and safety standards, others will be well run, clean efficient and with a high regard for less stress on the animal.

If you want to ensure that animals are treated well, spend the extra, don't try to stop people eating meat altogether.

Yes, the silage is outside and the cows are free to wander in and out of the cubicle housing as they wish. So, they have shelter and exercise.
We have many cows that are in excess of 15 years old. Average life expectancy of about 13/14 calves per cow, so about 15/16 years.

I still don't see cruelty, and I live with them.

fascicle where did I tell people where to draw the line terms of putting ethics into practice. of course these items don't have to contain the by products of the meat industry but you want them cheaply so they do. the alternatives are out of the reach of most people on a daily basis. It is true, you might not like it but it is fundamentally true. I know. I have been and seen tallow and greaves being made from dead animals. what you mean is they don't have to contain it and you are right. but they do and people should know this so that they can make a choice. I really resent people lecturing me about animal cruelty whilst slapping on the makeup and walking around in their leather shoes. by all means draw the line where you want.
