'some cultures expect little boys to sit when they wee'

note home from nursery on progress, contained this line referring to my son. 'xxxx sat on the toilet independently. Next steps: Encourage independence and ensure staff awareness that some cultures expect little boys to sit when they wee'.

I'm a bit Confused Don't many many 3 yr olds do this??? Plus our english is great as we're bi-lingual, not EAL, so seems even odder. I presume we present as pretty english!

I just don't have the urge to clean wee off the seat whenever he goes, so he can stand up as soon as he works it out for himself.

dh sits to wee not cultural just lazy

Lemonfairydust · 22/01/2014 13:19

This message confuses me, it seems like it's directed more at the staff than yourselves, so I'm wondering why they're bringing it to your attention at all? Confused How odd.

WilsonFrickett · 22/01/2014 13:25

DH is 48. He sits to wee. 'Why stand when you can sit?' is his reasoning. So now DS8 sits to wee, which has the added bonus of driving my DF mad (he's worried DS will either catch the gay or turn into a girl).

It does sound to me as if the note is addressing staff training issues though.

worridmum · 22/01/2014 13:26

but their really is cultures behind just sitting to wee as I have been in many many nations were there are no urinals and there are signs for toursts requesting you to sit down to wee (or atleast my DH said so I have never been in these male toliets Smile )

ViviPru · 22/01/2014 13:31

some cultures expect little boys to sit when they wee

That'll include the 'culture' in my house then. DH was trained to sit as will any boychildren I might produce.

OpalQuartz · 22/01/2014 13:33

It'll be for OFSTED's benefit I bet. It'll tick a box about cultural awareness. They probably copied it directly from OFSTED guidelines.

SomethingOnce · 22/01/2014 13:37

Sounds like they're trying to be inclusive by making sure possible cultural differences are accommodated.

Poor nursery. This sort if thing is a bit 'damned if you do and damned if you don't', really.

squoosh · 22/01/2014 13:38

I'd be a bit weirded out by a grown man sitting down to wee.

ViviPru · 22/01/2014 13:40

I'd be a bit weirded out by a grown man sitting down to wee.

Initially, I was a bit like, hmm, that's peculiar.... but now I'm more weirded out by widdle all over the floor when friends visit

SomethingOnce · 22/01/2014 13:41

Pissy floors gross me out.

WitchWay · 22/01/2014 13:43

My DH & DS sit to wee mostly, unless they're using a urinal, obviously. No idea why, they just do. With DH most toilet opportunities give him a chance to sit with his laptop (grrr Angry Confused) but DS doesn't compute in the loo

BeCool · 22/01/2014 14:25

I'd be a bit weirded out by a grown man sitting down to wee.
Surely this would only because it is different to what you are used to? You'd get over it I'm sure.

BeCool · 22/01/2014 14:26

Surely if men are doing a poo they will also do a wee sitting down? Changing positions mid movements just seems OTT and does't make sense?

Do we need a poll?

OddFodd · 22/01/2014 14:30

Yes I used to think it was a bit Hmm the first time I saw a man sitting down to wee but then I thought that standing up, unless in a urinal/pissing on a bonfire situation, is entirely pointless. And likely to be messier.

ViviPru · 22/01/2014 14:32

pissing on a bonfire situation Grin

MarianneEnjolras · 22/01/2014 14:38

My 3 year old ds sits to wee. He knows dh stands and I've asked ds if he would like to stand but he's happy sitting down.

Never thought anything of it and assume he will stand when he's ready, if he wants to.

LouSend · 22/01/2014 14:40

When children use the toilets in a nursery at the age of three they're often accompanied by a member of staff and often there are other children present.

Doors won't be locked and probably won't be closed. Other children may have seen him sitting. He may have seen other children standing. Some explanation may have followed.

The staff have made you aware of this, I think.

WilsonFrickett · 22/01/2014 14:56

I'd be a bit weirded out by a grown man sitting down to wee.

I'm more weirded out by toilet seats being left up tbh, especially when male friends visit our house.

gingermop · 22/01/2014 15:07

my dp sits for a wee, hes a lazy bugga Grin

FarmerSueTickle · 22/01/2014 15:07

My DH sits down to pee. He says it solves the age-old problem of 'the last few drops' Grin

RunRunRuby · 22/01/2014 15:32

One of my only memories of playschool (now pre-school I think?) is sitting in a circle and the teacher demonstrating how boys should sit and point their willies down to wee, as they had had to wipe up lots of wee in the loos! Grin if I ever have boys I shall try to encourage this given how many grown men seem to have issues with aim.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 22/01/2014 15:33

DS stands up but his German kindergarten make him sit down. Caused a bit of a problem when he was holding onto it all day because he didn't want to sit down Hmm DH swears he doesn't drip/spray, I reckon they don't realise.

WitchWay · 22/01/2014 15:37

FarmerSue - hadn't thought of the last few drops - perhaps that's why - never thought to ask. Certainly I don't have to clear up wee from all over the place unless FIL has been - he stands up

LaFataTurchina · 22/01/2014 16:27

I work in a nursery and I'm pretty sure they've just written it for ofsted/tick boxy reasons.

In the EYFS under the physical development:health and self care bit there's all the stuff about toileting/hand washing etc. and then theres a bit about how adults can help
"discuss cultural expectations for toileting , since in some cultures young boys may be used to sitting rather than standing at the toilet"

IME most little boys sit, and only some of the taller 3/4 year olds stand.
