Scrooges...

So just before Christmas a party of 8 of us ( old school friends) went out for a catch up and pre-xmas dinner. They let me choose the venue so I went for a mid range London venue that I know well from one of the owners who is a client of mine. End of the night I asked for the bill - we'd agreed to split equally beforehand. The Maitre 'd then pops over and tells me that the owner had been in while we were there and had covered the bill for us - which was really nice of him.

So then I suggested to the party that seeing as we had all saved around £70 each that we should all chuck in a £20 each as a "tip". Half the party were fine with this and the other half looked at me like i'd just suggested a threesome with their mother. One of them even joked "I'll pay 15%.. 15% of nothing is nothing".

Eventually everyone did chip in and we left the sum for the manager to put in the tip kitty. However 2 of the party still think i'm unreasonable to demand that they tip "so much" despite the fact that we all saved a considerable amount of money by the owners kindness. I now feel like I should have politely refused the owners kind gesture and made this scrooges pay full whack.

Tight bar stewards. "15% of nothing is nothing" ??? Seriously??? I don't know how you avoided punching him.

The tight members of your group obviously value £20 more than the good opinion of their friends. I bet they would be the first to moan about low pay if their precious children got jobs in restaurants too.
