Every time I cross at one of these I take my life in my hands. Either you know the road so well that you should be prepared for the crossing and slow down/look or if you don't know the road so well you should be paying attention and spot the crossing in enough time to be able to stop. They are even helpfully marked with flashing lights.

Yesterday I hit a record. Four cars carried on whizzing over the crossing while I, ds (on scooter) and dd (in sling) were half way across the crossing.

Green Cross Man never looked like that when I was at school !

K8Middleton · 17/01/2014 16:21

lol no, he was rather more craggy. With big sideburns.

That's actually a dress up costume you can buy/hire. For when you want to, erm, pretend to be the Green Cross Man Hmm Grin

I think I'm right in saying that if you apply the Highway Code exactly, traffic only has to stop if pedestrians are on the crossing, not if they are standing at the side, even if they are presumably waiting for traffic to stop so they can step out. Also cars do not have to stop for people who cycle or skateboard or scoot across a zebra crossing.

I think you are almost correct Sunnymeg. A foot on the crossing and they definitely must stop. Although round my way you'd soon be squashed.

Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing

  • look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross

  • you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads

*do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching

*be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

*A zebra crossing with a central island is two separate crossings (see pictures in Crossings (18 to 30)).
