To think a National Trust working holiday would be fun

I'm in my 50s, fit ish and looking for a 'singles' holiday that's something other than walking or lying on a beach...and is cheap.

AIBU to think the National Trust working holidays would be fun and enjoyable or am I deluding myself?

Yeah if that's your sort of thing...why not?!

I'd love to do one of these!

Yep they are fun, been on quite a few. You usually get a group with women that haven't had kids yet, a couple of teenagers doing Duke of Edinburgh (they only let 2 at a time of those) and people 50+.

They vary dramatically in terms of how much you have to rough it and how hard the work is. You usually get behind the scenes type access which is very interesting and get to be in the gardens/properties when they are closed to the public. You get a day off and the group stayed together on the holidays I have been on and went to another property locally or a nearby town.

Yes I did them when 16. There were no older people though, only teenagers and early 20s

Thanks, Cakebar and OP! I've been wondering the same and it's good to hear positive views :)

We did have one once where there was a single bloke and he'd lined up online dates for various nights in the local pub Confused. He did work hard though.

I did it at 17 and there were older people. It was brilliant fun and I'd do it again.

I've done two of them. Had a fab time on both. Smile

First was on the Northumberland coast which was beautiful but the accomodation left a little to be desired.

Second time was in Sussex, accomodation much better but not such a lively bunch, the assistant leader was a bit of a killjoy.

You get one day off, spend evenings in the pub if there's one close by and you don't cook every night!

I have met some lovely people from a level students to pensioners, always a good mix.

I just had a quick look and it has all changed since I last went, there seem to be more holiday options, rather than just work, including the option to take all your family once the kids are 6+. That might be fun.

WaitMonkey · 16/01/2014 18:07

I'd rather stick a fork in my eye. But even I can see they could be fun, if your in to that sort of thing. Go for it.

I've done them in the past and enjoyed them. The activities are usually rewarding and you meet some good people. The ones I've been on there was a range of ages but IIRC they do run different types of holidays for different age groups as well as ones for all comers. Go for it!
