To think that trolls who make up threads should put their creative energies to good use and take up writing short stories?

I stuggle to understand the motive behind trolling on internet forums, especially the type of trolls who make up scinarios that are close to the truth but just but the events just didn't happen.

I think these trolls should use their creative writing skills to write short stories.

AIBU to think that every person found to be trolling should be sent the information about creative writing courses so they can use their "skills" in other ways?

The motivation for trolling is more complex than wanting to show off their writing skills, some trolls genuinely enjoy getting attention and upsetting others.

Also, the "creativeness" you speak of is very collaborative (MNers themselves are at times very inventive and... interpretative!), whereas, classically, "creative writing" requires discipline and independent work.

It's more about the knowledge that people are out there worrying about them, believing them, wanting to help etc that gets trolls going I think. They enjoy messing with people's emotions and watching as people fight with each other to defend the troll.

That's what I assume anyway having no experience of being one, just reading many troll threads.

good writers 'feel' people, they can understand and describe emotions and move the reader.

trolls only troll for their own benefit or are drunk or very immature or cruel. none of these make a good writer.

Some of the troll. non genuine threads are writers trying out storylines.

Don't encourage them.

I think i am very naive about the motives behind trolling. I just couldn't imagine anyone would get comfort/satisfaction about people feeling sad/sorry/disturbed about something they had posted that was made up.

I think the desire to make people feel something is good when ignighted by a photo or story or poem, I wonder if possibly the desire to make other people react in an emotional way could be channeled into another form, but the reality is probably no, it can't be used in another way.
