To be saddened by the waste

Sat in a meeting the other day doing some strategy work, an agency bod presented the fact that YouTube is now the largest (most used) search engine.

When challenged that surely he meant Google he confirmed YouTube. But surely this engine is not the most relevant for looking up useful facts, work use etc?

No no its not but they do have a lot of funny cat videos and the like he says. True fact.

So AIBU to be saddened by the fact that our great nation is now mainly using the awesome invention that is the world wide web, the opening up of our global minds, the power of collective knowledge and communication.

To watch funny cats.

You should be ashamed

I work in marketing and part of the reason YouTube is so powerful is because video content is increasingly significant. An embedded video demonstrating what a local carpet fitting company did (it's surprisingly complex) did wonders for their website. YouTube is very clean and easy to embed.

As a copywriter all if this is bad and wrong and people should pay me for writing WORDS for their website Wink

Cat videos are hilarious

That is all I watch on Youtube.

Bunny ones too.

Life's serious enough without ignoring funny pooties and bunny wunnys.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/01/2014 14:14

Sorry Yabu

Wish there was more cats that porn

Kitty over pussy any day

pist · 16/01/2014 14:15

Fakebook · 16/01/2014 14:17

My DS and I watch kinder egg videos on YouTube. It's amazing how addictive the sound of the foil unwrapping is. Then the toy and its assembly. Brilliant. Cat videos are crap.

PedlarsSpanner · 16/01/2014 14:17

I ain't ashamed

PumpkinPositive · 16/01/2014 14:21

Are you referring to this meme that was doing the rounds last year? Grin

If someone from the 1950's suddenly appeared today what would be the most difficult thing to explain about the modern world?

In my pocket I have a device that is capable of accessing the entirety of information known to man.

I use it to look at funny pictures of cats and argue with strangers.

Hermione123 · 16/01/2014 14:21

You can also get so any kids programmes on YouTube, alongside the rot.

DoJo · 16/01/2014 14:23

Where did he get his figures from? I find that very hard to believe...

mijas99 · 16/01/2014 14:35

If only that were true!

UriGeller · 16/01/2014 15:04

TED talks are on youtube. Its not all lolcatz and eyeliner tutorials.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 16/01/2014 15:06

But this one is brilliant!

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/01/2014 15:18

I found a video on YouTube that showed me how to fix my washing machine

softlysoftly · 16/01/2014 15:25

Fuck I just laughed at Ken Adams link

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/01/2014 15:35

but everyone knows Wink

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/01/2014 15:39

I suspect it was actually made by cats, they just let TBL take the credit - for now.

Crowler · 16/01/2014 15:39

I love getting lost in Youtube. YABU!

Dahlen · 16/01/2014 15:40

Apparently 60% of internet usage is for porn. Hmm

Cats are an improvement on that I think. Wink

This is why I love the human race - it can be selfish yet generous, corrupt yet honest, careless yet thoughtful, cowardly yet heroic, banal yet creative - it's entirely in keeping that we could do things as wonderful as fly to the moon and create the internet and then use the technology to build anti-gravity chambers for stag parties and watching funny videos of cats. Grin

People are many things but as a species we are never boring.

YouTube is a wonderful learning resource.

It's great for learning how to do new things with my guitar, art supplies, keyboard, etc. You can also learn a lot from listening to TED Talks, Yale Open Lectures, spoken word poetry, tutorials on fixing/making things, loads of new music and (intelligent, informative) stand-up comedy.

AwfulMaureen · 16/01/2014 15:46

Yabu. The majority will always be entertained by the banal. Rest assured that there are great minds....who use the internet for great things.

McFox · 16/01/2014 15:47

There are tons of educational videos on there though - I know, because I've made some of them! I also watch YT videos to learn, e.g TEDtalks and the like, university lectures etc and bits and bobs to help me learn new skills. Don't be so cynical!

MyNameIsKenAdams · 16/01/2014 16:06

Also, it is a bit like complaining that the bus goes to the Museum but everyone gets off at the pub three stops before. The purpose of the bus is to access all the places on its route, not to only supply to those goibg to the museum.

McFox · 16/01/2014 16:50

Well put :)

softlysoftly · 16/01/2014 16:53

There should be no pubs.

Just museums.
