to not understand the fascination with "shoes and handbags"

I have friends who think nothing of spending £150 on a pair of shoes/ handbag. The same friends who complain they are skint every month. Not just one pair/ bag, but loads of them. What am I missing? Genuine question, I have a pair of shoes for work (well, trying to replace them after 3 years as they have fallen apart - and cost me £3 in the first place), I have a pair of high heeled shoes for going out, a pair of walking boots and a pair of trainers. I will probably buy myself a pair of flip flops if the sun comes out this Summer. What possible use do people have for more than that?

I find bags annoying and will only use backpacks / rucksacks

I'll spend some money on boots or shoes but £150 is about my limit and I'll only wear flat, wide non distorting footwear.

I love shoes, but sadly am a narrow size 9 , and only expensive Italian shoes tend to fit.

I have 6 pairs of knee boots, 6 ankle and about 12 pairs of assorted shoes/pumps/sandals. All cost between £150-400.
But I have had them for years...some boots for 6 years. I look after them, polish them. repair when necessary.

There is always the panic that I will not be able to find a replacement pair.

I remember having to wear boys shoes as a teenager, and it was awful.

I am not fussed about bags...have about 4.
