AIBU?

Using the word "vagina" when you mean "vulva"

AIBU to think that people should know the difference between these parts of the body and use the correct names? It's not uncommon to hear people use the word vagina (the internal organ) when they clearly mean the vulva (the external parts). For example, "the great wall of vagina" sells a "Vagina Casting Kit", but you're going to be smearing alginate over your vulva not shoving it up your vagina! They also sell "The big coloring book of vaginas", and mention "...From the compact smooth vagina to a coiffed vagina with full lips..." when they mean vulva FFS! It grinds my gears!

I was on another board about dogs and people started talking about their dogs vulvas, you know, when in heat and stuff... I have to stop reading. It just seems ridiculously overmedicalised. Silly. With a gp I might be able to use the correct words with a straight face, otherwise the eyes will roll I'm afraid. I have a cunt in this house, no cutesy words. Very common, I'm sure. Grin

If I needed to use correct terminology, I would say vulva. Saying vagina when you mean vulva is like saying toe when you mean foot.

I do suspect that culturally, the emphasis is put on the vagina because that's the bit that is important to men.

I only have a DS and we say vulva, because that is the bit he is talking about. But I am pregnant and think I am going to have to introduce the idea of a vagina now as he wants to know how the baby is getting out.

I don't care. It's like saying testicles when you mean scrotum. Not really worth getting annoyed about in day to day chat.

Haha, yes true! Oh my god, what to call the dogs lady parts?!

I'd avoid checking out "the great wall of vagina" if it's that irritating Grin

Our dog has what my husband and I refer to as a "faux-gina," although I guess if we're being technical, it's a faux-vulva. She's a very tall dog, and when she sits on her hind legs, you can see this flabby pouch of bare skin low on her belly that folds in in the middle and looks like a vulva.

I have stubbed my Vulva
I have stubbed my vagina.

Ooooh yes, I see what you mean Grin

I don't use either of these words. Round here it's pee-pee. I have no need for anything else.

It's rather serendipitous that I have come across this thread after a vulva related thread I've not long done.

"Crowley"

Is it also a Shag Shag?

Dd2 calls hers a front bottom, and has a "side bottom" too as she has to turn to the side to see her bottom!

Just don't like the anatomically correct word though.... Do sore bottoms have to become 'sore anus'?

Report
Crowler · 13/01/2014 18:53

It could be a shag-shag on occasion, but more often not. :-)

My niece called it "front butt," when she was little. She came up with it on her own.

When our boys were little, we taught them vulva, because we wanted them to know the correct names for things. Plus, vagina is really hard for a little kid to say.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Everyone, boys and girls, have 'bits' here, which is a perfectly adequate catch-all term. If I was going to the GP I would be more specific. But, tbh, I was never taught the difference at school so I see no reason why I'd know the difference.

I like "front butt".

It amazes me people are bothered by this, I rarely have cause to refer to it at all. In fact I have never needed to refer to my vulva at all although once had internal itching caused by thrush and called it internal itching and pointed to my lap when I saw the doctor.

My DD says her 'wee bum' as opposed to her 'poo bum' words she gave them independently.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 13/01/2014 18:56

I really don't care.

Dd calls her genitals her daisy ( she thought of it herself)

But how many people know the every part of the body, without googling would you know what the uvula is.

My DM tried to teach us the correct names for parts of our bodies and would test us to see if we have remembered.i will never forget her frustration when I remembered it all wrong I thought the correct name for knee was pastie, penis was Venus and vagina was ventriloquist! Alli could remember was it started with a 'v' I think I was about six at the time.
