to admit I stink

itismesorry · 12/01/2014 22:51

and to beg for help Sad

I fart ALL the time. It's clearly linked to diet, but I can't think what. I eat very bland foods, I don't eat during the day at all when at work as it just causes terrible gas. I get constipated a lot too.

But the main issue is clearly the farts. I recognise they are totally anti-social but I can't keep them in - they seep out. They are not loud, however they stink to high heaven, I really have never in my life known anyone produce such smelly ones.

Please don't laugh. I swear, I don't "look" the part. I am smart, well put together, neat, tidy - I just cannot help it and honestly don't know why. I've kept a food diary but the doctor wasn't helpful at all and at the moment I am conscious my bedroom stinks like a sewer and I feel sick with it.

What do you eat? Look up FODMAP foods and cut down on them.

Eating oats has ruined quite a few social events for me. Thankfully I'm on top if the problem now and avoid oats

Yamyoid · 12/01/2014 23:39

Sorry, I can't offer any advice but after reading what you've eaten the last few days, I just thought I'd say that apples and oats give me trapped wind and stomach cramps. Oats are particularly bad.

Toecheese · 12/01/2014 23:40

Also ghat feeling of pooing on the loo but never quite being finished - oats do that to me too.

Shaky · 12/01/2014 23:42

Oats also give me wicked wind

Oats So Sinple = Oh So Smelly

Yes I was once told that diarrhoea can actually be a symptom of bad constipation, because it can be that the constipation is causing a blockage and the runnier poo is all that can get past (sorry for TMI!) - sounds like the situation could be similar if it's impacted/compacted.

bumbumsmummy · 12/01/2014 23:46

Charcoal tablets are brilliant for this but you sound like you need a good clean out n detox

Maybe a colonic, senna and beetroot with plenty of water to get things moving

peggyundercrackers · 12/01/2014 23:46

If I eat lots of protein I get like this, tuna and chicken affect me the worst.

mrshap · 12/01/2014 23:49

Acidophilus from Holland an barrat for good gut bacteria, actimel has too much sugar in it not good to use.
Have you been on antibiotics recently op?

Toecheese · 12/01/2014 23:51

It's really nice to hear others can't eat oats too. Never met anyone else who couldn't eat oats in RL.

Gullygirl · 12/01/2014 23:55

I just reread your posts, OP, and see that you are eating apples - they can cause bad gas,as can peaches and pears.
Foods that are Hugh in sulphur too, like beef and pork, also wine.
Good luck,I hope you can find an answer soon.

Prettykitty111 · 12/01/2014 23:56

Also tell your doctor about the throat constricting thing. I'm worried you are focussing on one problem when there may be more things all inter linked. My uncle had this and needed treatment for it. Can't remember what it was called and don't panic it wasn't serious life threatening stuff but his throat would try to close when he ate anything and it hurt him alot. The drs sorted it pretty quick so don't forget to mention this when you are there.

GlitzAndGiggles · 12/01/2014 23:58

I used to have gassy problems and started having a hot drink every night before bed it settled my stomach right down

ShitOnAStick · 13/01/2014 00:09

Poor you op. Definitely get to the docs. My Dh reeks though he doesn't have constipation. In hid case all fruit and veg and spices make his farts foul, some medications do too. He stinks the house out. I still love him though Grin
I used to have dreadful wind and a gurgling swollen abdomen with permanent diarrhea during my teens, doc said it was ibs. I used to avoid eating because of it. It all stopped completely when I moved out of my parents house. I think it was caused by stress, haven't had any issues since.
Do you think you could be stressed op? How long has it been going on for?

foreverondiet · 13/01/2014 00:13

Looking at what you eat apples are certainly a high FODMAP food. Snack a jacks not ideal either. It's not about a bland diet, but I advise cutting out all FODMAP foods, and anything processed and keep a food diary and also record symptoms.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 13/01/2014 00:14

PLEASE stop recommending Actimel/probiotic drinks, people. The OP clearly needs proper help, not quackery.
Probiotic drinks are watered down yoghurt, in essence, and are now no longer even allowed to pretend that they could possibly 'aid digestive health' (FFS).
See this article as the first one I could find, of many that say the same thing. They are overpriced bollocks, and should not be recommended to someone who's clearly suffering.

PedlarsSpanner · 13/01/2014 00:25

Fedup do google Bristol Stool Scale for an idea of where your poo is (rabbity pellets for eg) and where it should be

OP good luck my dear

Amazing so many have oat sensitivity, crikey

Adeleh · 13/01/2014 00:40

You don't stink, OP. don't think that way about yourself. Loads of people have flatulence issues, and it doesn't mean they stink, just that they need a bit of medical help. Thanks Hopefully you can go back to a more sympathetic GP who can help you sort it.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 13/01/2014 00:52

I was told the same about being constipated can cause diarrhoea as it seeps round the blockage.

However, I've come on here to suggest you get the throat thing looked at. Some people have pharyngeal webs/Schatzki ring (not dangerous but very irritating) but they can narrow the oesaphagus causing food to get stuck, which generally has to regurgitated from the oesaphagus (not the stomach as it hasn't got that far). I have a Schatzki ring and sometimes food gets completely blocked for hours. It is irritated by heartburn in my case but is also much worse if I rush or if I'm walking around eating etc. You might want to get it investigated just to rule out anything more sinister.

TulipOHare · 13/01/2014 00:52

I got really farty for a while last year, complete with embarrassing gurgly noises and unpredictable loose stools Blush. Was awful and I even started to wonder if it was IBS or something. Eventually twigged it was caused by xylitol, a sweetener. Stopped using it and the problem went away.

Any artificial sweeteners in your diet?

GarlicReturns · 13/01/2014 01:09

I either have to strain with and not much comes out, or it's diarrhoea.

I had this for years. The doctor ran some blood tests and found out I'm dairy intolerant. Stopping all milk-related intake is an unbelievable nuisance - and tragedy! No cheese! - but it made quite a difference. I' am by no means saying it'll be the same for you, merely highlighting that this sort of thing is a common symptom of loads of things, and your GP should take it more seriously.

I'm worried about your starving all day and the throat contraction thing. Do you think you might be eating-disordered at all? The starving will make your tummy gurgles much worse. The aim, naturally, would be to get you eating normal volumes of food, evenly spaced throughout the day, without your digestive system throwing tantrums. This means finding out what's wrong.

Activated charcoal tablets, such as Rennie Deflatine, really do help. Save them for crucial moments, though, as the charcoal also prevents you body absorbing nutrients from your food.

Switching to home-made bread made a huge difference for me, too. Bread factories push gas through the dough. Although there's nothing harmful in this process, my system seemed particularly good at extracting that gas and ejecting it out of my bum! Home-made is slightly better for you, too.

GarlicReturns · 13/01/2014 01:13

Good point about sweeteners, Tulip! They are the work of the devil!
Stevia's also associated with diarrhoea. If you want sweet, have sugar. Or honey, maple syrup, treacle, whatever, but no sweetness 'magic'!

EmmaBemma · 13/01/2014 05:28

I am on laxido long term (osmotic laxative) as I have terribly sluggish digestion. Just a low dose. I think the constipation is mroe to blame for your trumping issues than any particular food. Go to your GP, see if you can get a prescription, try for a few weeks and see if it improves.
