To wonder why grown adults find swearing funny

So I'm watching Derren Brown, well DH is really!

A few times yes sworn and the actual swear word has got a huge laugh from the audience. I've noticed this in a few times and find it odd.

Because it's a little bit naughty, especially on telly.

No idea.
I've always wondered why so many people find chucking yourself about, pretending to fall over or gurning funny.
different people are amused by different things, I guess.

I find things like yes minister funny, and other so called 'intelligent humour'
Bores the pants off many, I know.

humour is an odd thing.

Ah I see that I think!

I'm on my first week of no carbs and struggling to think!

Swearing is probably humorous in this context. Derren Brown is typically quite serious and straight laced (from what I can gather...) so the odd FUCK probably draws a few laughs.

I don't find swearing funny and I don't know any adults who do. I am not, however, ashamed to admit that I enjoy a good swear. Especially since having DS and having to moderate my potty mouth; when he's in bed or I'm at work I do all my swearing in bulk.

ShatnersBassoon · 12/01/2014 22:02

It's a normal reaction to very mild, harmless shock. If my mum swore, I'd probably laugh.

YANBU. There's no wit or wisdom to it, is there? I've noticed that some of the least funny stand-up comedians swear a lot, presumably to look "hard" and make up for their lack of content. It's not even as if swearing is original in any way, or shocking (even if you don't like it). Everyone's heard it all before.

newyearhere · 12/01/2014 22:41

I think this is why I don't find Catherine Tate's "Nan" in the slightest bit funny. An old woman who swears. That's it... so what?

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/01/2014 22:47

Because sometimes swearing is funny and when done well, can be hilarious.

Not saying that was the case in the Derren Brown thing the OP is talking about, that sort of swearing is shite.Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 12/01/2014 22:52

I'm Scottish, swearing is hilarious.

BadgersNadgers · 12/01/2014 23:00

Because he's using his freaky mind control to make them laugh. Do you have many fillings? The metal might make you immune to his mind-bending ways.

AuntyDepressants · 12/01/2014 23:07

I'm with Laurie. I'm Scottish and with my accent it'd be rude not to.
"I do all my swearing in bulk" struck a chord too! Grin
