It is a wallet style plastic one which to be new but no tags. Not a designer brand

Or am I a tightwad.
Want to buy it for someone having a tough time at mo so want to get as much as possible for budget.

CaptainTripps · 11/01/2014 11:51

No you aren't a tightwad.
I may get shouted down but charity shop prices are way too pricey these days. Is it the high overheads arising from moves into the high street?

AwfulMaureen · 11/01/2014 11:52

YANBU. Charity shops are annoying me....Primark t shirts for 7 pounds etc. I know they need to make a profit but this is not how to do it. More annoying is the way some shops put stained clothing on the rails....no checks are taking place.

AwfulMaureen · 11/01/2014 11:53

Captain another similar thread claimed it was the high street overheads...yes...maybe they all need to open online shops instead?

SaucyJack · 11/01/2014 11:54

Can't comment without having seen it, but YANBU to say that some charity shops charge totally laughable prices for stuff.

One near us often sells individual used babygros for £1.99. It's stupid.

Occasionally tho, I still do buy things that are a rip-off and I just mentally assign the extra money I've paid as a donation.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 11/01/2014 11:54

yes too expensive. A primark one is about £3

Sleepthief · 11/01/2014 11:55

Or the fact that fewer people give to charity these days Hmm? Charity shops have always been on the high street.

I think YABU, OP. If you think it's too much, don't buy it, but charities have to make money somehow...

AwfulMaureen · 11/01/2014 11:56

Sleep but who on earth would buy a purse like that? It just seems daft!

highho1 · 11/01/2014 11:56

The strsngething is I have had some real bagains from this shop. £3 for a duplo set etc etc. Another one charged £1.99 for a poppered vest. They are only £1 each new.

OP posts:
highho1 · 11/01/2014 11:59

Well I have been back to the shop today. It is still there.
Tempted to ask if it was a mistake. Not sure I am brave enough though.

There are massive discerpancies in the charity shops local to me. They sell primark clothing for next prices and then you can find amazing bargains.

I recently bought aspecial edition Disney scene it game for £1.99, and looked to see how much it would have cost on amazon and found it would have been £68.

That eneded up being DDs main present. Grin

highho1 · 11/01/2014 12:00

Come to think of it I got a purse from New look before xmas and it was only £3. Just as nice as this one.

Charities have seen funding and donations plummet through the recession, they are there to raise funds for their cause. Shops are trying to plug the gap.
If it's too expensive, don't buy it. It's hardly an essential purchase.

mrsjay · 11/01/2014 12:01

I unce gently put down a really nice handbag in a charity shop I dont know it was designer but it was nice but they were asking £25 for it I was [shocked] as i dont really use charity shops just the bag caught my eye, thinking about it it was probably designer and i would have got a bargain Grin

LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 11/01/2014 12:01

sleepthief - the thing is, if charity shops were to stop overcharging - i am NOT going to pay £5 for a primark T-shirt! then they would make more money. If you ever get to look in the backrooms of these places you will see bag upon bag of clothes stacked up. They have plenty of stock - so sell it at a reasonable price and you'll make more money. I like to shop in charity shops because im hard up - the fact that it goes to charity is an added bonus for me, rather than the principal reason i shop there. So if a jumper is a fiver - that is a fair bit of money out of my budget, i'll only buy it if its in really good condition, looks really nice and fits well. If it were £2 i'd buy it and take a chance. I will leave things on the shelves if they are too expensive and im sure i'm not the only one. They don't pay for the stock - so let it go at a reasonable price and increase your turnover. I'm not saying they should sell a mulberry bag for a tenner, but if its el cheapo, don't insult my intelligence and charge me over the odds for something.

mrsjay · 11/01/2014 12:01

once*

DameDeepRedBetty · 11/01/2014 12:03

I have been known to tell a charity shop manager that something she's priced up was originally rather less than that brand new! At least one turned out to not know that Atmosphere was Primark's own brand.

I don't expect them to change prices for me though. Items are worth what someone will pay for them, and it may be that another buyer will come along and be willing to pay £6 for a plain primark teeshirt.

jacks365 · 11/01/2014 12:03

My local charity shop would charge £1 for a pair of asda children's jeans which cost approx £3 and the same price for a pair of designer jeans costing approx £20 new guess which jeans I bought

CuntyBunty · 11/01/2014 12:03

So don't buy it then?

That's what I do in any shop:

see something I like, within my budget, I buy it.

see something I like, too expensive, I don't buy it.

Please don't bargain with the charity shop volunteers though.

WildThong · 11/01/2014 12:06

There is a top hat in my local oxfam - for £230!
Shock

mrsjay · 11/01/2014 12:08

I have seen atmosphere selling on ebay as vintage Shock people are really chancing their arm

highho1 · 11/01/2014 12:09

It is an essentkal purchase for someone who had her handbag and therefore her purse stolen though.
Will have to hit primari I guess.

OP posts:
highho1 · 11/01/2014 12:10

Although I would prefer to give money to charity shop than a high street chain.

OP posts:
LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 11/01/2014 12:10

But cunty - can't you see that if they get the pricing wrong then they are going to miss out because many people will do just that, walk out without bying it?

OK, someone will buy it eventually, but whats better - sell six purses in a week at £2 each or one for a fiver? Bearing in mind that you have not had to pay out for the purses in the first place.

You can still get bargains in charity shops, I could not believe it when there was a bugaboo, in excellent in the local cancer research shop for £25 the other week - looking back i should have bought it and sold it on ebay. I told the woman (who i knew to be the manager, so not a volunteer) that it was stupidly cheap and didn't she know they were about £600 to buy new and she looked at me like i was a bit simple and just smiled. Needles to say it wasn't in there for long. Hopefully it was sold to a mum in need of a pushchair but i suspect that it turned up on ebay or gumtree!

I bought about £100 worth of thomas tank stuff for DD when she was young - they wanted a £1 for it, it was all chucked in a black bag - i knew it was worth more, so i gave them a fiver as thats all i could afford but i still felt guilty. Same shop will have had primark shite on the shleves for a fiver though.

SilverApples · 11/01/2014 12:11

It's still a choice though, go to Primark if you are outraged at prices.
Don't donate if you disapprove of the shop's pricing policies.
Charities are there to raise funds, not to provide people with cheap top hats and purses.
Take your custom elsewhere.
