To smother the elephant lying next to me?

Usually his snoring is not too bad, but tonight I cannot seem to ignore/sleep through it. It is nearly 2 am, there are pillows right here, no MN jury would convict?

There's one next to me as well!

weirdbird · 11/01/2014 02:07

He rolls over if I poke him, but just as I'm starting to drift off he starts again, thank god for the iPad!

Imagine the uproar if a bloke posted this about his elephant wife.

weirdbird · 11/01/2014 02:17

He sounds like an elephant trumpeting, it is the sound he is currently making.

Well snoring has stopped as DD2 has woken up being sick, so at least I now have a reason to be awake at 3.30 in the morning!

I snore horribly (I am female) because I have sleep apnea. I have a CPAP machine now and my snoring has stopped completely.

Complications of sleep apnea are severe. Your airway is being cut off so your oxygen levels drop. This puts strain on your heart and can result in a heart attack or stroke. Also causes weight gain and slowly kills brain cells.

I only mention it because so many people say "it's just snoring" without realising it could be something else. Nothing stopped me from snoring (nose strips, mouth guards etc etc) because it was my airway collapsing that causes the vibration and thus the noise.

My husband has been sleeping MUCH better now and so have I :) I'm less tired during the day, my energy levels should improve, as should my mood :D

catinboots · 11/01/2014 06:49

I find a quick, double-pronged poke up his nostrils with my fingers does the job. Startles him without waking and he normally turns on his side.

impatienttobemummy · 11/01/2014 06:58

Do it! Mines not snoring at the mo but the way I feel right now I might smother him anyway Angry

Chottie · 11/01/2014 07:01

Turn him on his side.

littlewhitebag · 11/01/2014 07:04

I am bad. I turfed DH out of the bed at 2am as the racket he was making was keeping me awake. To be fair I was willing to go to the spare room myself but he said he would go. We are very sleep incompatible.

MadIsTheNewNormal · 11/01/2014 07:06

Imagine the uproar if a bloke posted this about his elephant wife.

That's exactly what I was just thinking!!!

I can see the frantic backpedalling now, as some bloke tries to explain that he has no intention of killing his wife for being fat, and it was just a flippant comment because he was tired and irritable. He'd be sentenced to death by the MN kangaroo court, and no mistake.

bumbleymummy · 11/01/2014 07:29

She's already explained that it's the snoring sound he's making that sounds like an elephant - not that he's fat. Unclench.

DaddyPigsMistress · 11/01/2014 07:37

Im the snorer here. Poor dp retreated to the sofa last night to get some sleep.
He recorded me once, i sound like a revving motorbike. Stiff jabbing if i had to sleep next to myself i would smother me Grin

catinboots · 11/01/2014 09:38

What bumbley said ^^

PedlarsSpanner · 11/01/2014 11:18

Please read what syka posted. It's really important to understand that snoring isn't a bit of annoyance but can have serious health implications.

Jolleigh · 11/01/2014 11:23

Am I the only one whose OH can store in quite literally any position? It's from the moment he falls asleep too. I now wear earplugs to bed and play documentaries just about loud enough that I can hear the muffled words through the plugs.

HesterShaw · 11/01/2014 11:25

YANBU.

I was awake from 4.30, lying there rigid with suppressed fury.

It's not just the snoring - it's the popping noise.

Viviennemary · 11/01/2014 11:31

You can get sprays. I got one for DH before Christmas. I think it did help a little bit. Probably because me getting up and getting it out the drawer and putting on the light a few times a night wore me out so I fell asleep in the end. Grin I read about those rings you wear. Something to do with accupuncture. sp? But they are £30. So not willing to spend that much.

weirdbird · 11/01/2014 11:43

Thanks for those who understood my elephant comment in context, I might add that DH is not overweight, the whole post was meant to be generally light hearted, he does snore quite a lot but I can usually sleep through it.
I do understand that he can't help it, hence light hearted nature, obviously I need to work on my posting skills if it comes across as anything else!

Sympathies to all those who also have snorers male or female, when you are tired and can't sleep you can start feeling not entirely rational.

OP posts:
HesterShaw · 11/01/2014 11:44

Don't worry weirdbird, it is completely obvious you were being light hearted, and also that you are tired and frustrated. Completely obvious to anyone with half a brain that is

MisguidedAngel · 11/01/2014 11:50

I've tried lots of methods (not the double-fingered nostril poke though - I like it) and my current one seems effective. I flip all the covers off him, he seems to be able to shrug them back on without waking up but the movement stops the snores. If I'm lucky I can get back to sleep before he starts again.

weirdbird · 11/01/2014 11:54

Thanks Hester, don't usually post in AIBU but at 2am I was hoping for a bit more traffic, will stick to chat next time.

I totally got the joke!

figgypuddings · 11/01/2014 15:49

Tell Darth Vader to sleep in a different room.

sykadelic15 · 13/01/2014 03:16

Snoring in any position is indicative of sleep apnea.

Snoring immediately on falling asleep is as well.

Seriously, a lot of the posts on here really should schedule sleep studies for their spouses.

The new machines are so quiet I sometimes wonder if I've switched it off in my sleep. My husband no longer has to move to the other room (sometimes couch 'cause it's closer). I wish I didn't need a mask, but I do and it helps.
