toilet cleaning shared or not?

Just interested really as DH does help round the house so not a dig at him being lazy. Do you share the cleaning of the toilet with your partner? Its only when I thought DH has never cleaned any of the toilets since we have been together I started to wonder.
I am a SAHM but I mean never cleaned the toilet, not even at the weekend. It is the same with when the kids have sickness it is always me who scrapes the puke off of carpets, bed and the back seat of the car but that is a separate issue....
AIBU to think that once in a while DH should clean the toilet?

no offence intended, I live with three boys and they seem to lack the ability to wash up and hoover, I don't think they would even consider the toilet, though they will put the bins out

I am the only girl here and erm I suppose the "mum" of the house.

I should add these are only my flatmates, though I am close to one and we have some benefits Smile we are both single so no harm and no awkwardness at all

heatseeker · 10/01/2014 19:35

It's annoying that men don't consider cleaning the toilet even if they have left in a state and with two young sons I doubt I will be let off the hook any day soon! Smile
Should have to come to terms with it by now considering I have 3 brothers!

I don't think he did, but equally, there are jobs around the house that I've never done either so I can't complain.

GinOnTwoWheels · 10/01/2014 20:45

Toilet cleaning not shared in our house. I (female) also never clean it because it is DPs (male) job. We have a minimalist approach to house cleaning and the agreement is that I will dust and clean the kitchen incl cooker top once per week and he will vacuum and clean the bathroom once per week, which we both agree is the appropriate frequency.

Only exception is that if either of us work away, which we both do at different times of the year, the other will pick up the slack. Works for us.

There is no way on earth that I would clean a pissy toilet mainly used by careless men (DP must be an exception because I have never noticed 'dribbles').

MollyHooper · 10/01/2014 20:52

Does he clean the toilet if he makes a mess?

notso · 10/01/2014 21:03

DH cleans it after he has used it if the need arises but I do the proper clean with bleach etc.
He does clean up sick if DC are sick. Recently everyone in the house except DH had a D&V bug so he was very busy poor thing!

I have a DD and 3 DS's All are encouraged to leave the bathroom in a pleasant state. DH didn't flush the toilet or empty his baths when we first lived together thanks to his Mums mollycoddling. I don't intend inflicting that on any future in-laws.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/01/2014 21:05

There are people who clear up other adults' wee stains voluntarily?

Oh, ok, I won't pretend I'm shocked but I think that's absurd.

rachyconks · 10/01/2014 21:06

DH does the bathrooms. It's a total "boy job" in this house, along with bin emptying, oven cleaning, hoovering, mopping, amongst others. "Girl jobs" are sitting about, reading mn, choosing what to watch on tv. Seriously though, I do the laundry & ironing, which DH HATES with a passion, so he is happy with the division of labour. Everything else is split.

whois · 10/01/2014 21:08

DP leaves it clean, but has never 'cleaned' it with bleech and scrubbing. I did it about 6 timnes, then got cross and we got a cleaner. Now I never have to clean the toilet either.

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 10/01/2014 21:09

My husband always cleans the bathrooms. The chemicals irritate my chest. I sometimes feel guilty but it passes. Grin

I do lots of other things (not the hoovering though!) so I figure it evens out in the end.

and I think thats what matters. Not 50% of the loo cleaning and 50% of the ironing and 50 % ofthe cooking, but 50% of it all as a whole and if that meands one of you always cleans the loo while the other one does all the ironing - thats ok.
where it becomes wrong is when one or other thinks hang on a mo, im the muggins here doing 90% of everything!

afterthought · 10/01/2014 21:11

I don't do the toilet (although I ensure it is not gross after I've used it!) - that's DPs department. He does toilet, bins and ironing. I do dusting, hoovering, mopping and general tidying. We share washing dishes and laundry.

treaclesoda · 10/01/2014 21:22

yes, your DH should clean the toilet. Am always really shocked by how many women seem to live with men who won't do toilet cleaning.

treaclesoda · 10/01/2014 21:24

unless of course a couple have actually agreed between them that one of them doesn't mind doing all the toilet cleaning, that is obviously different.

Hassled · 10/01/2014 21:24

I do the toilet cleaning but in fairness DH does the cat sick. I'm happy with that.

FanFuckingTastic · 10/01/2014 21:26

Toilet just gets cleaned when it's dirty by whoever notices. I'd not be impressed with anyone who sees a dirty toilet and won't clean it after they use it.

Changebagsandgladrags · 10/01/2014 21:26

I do the toilet. DH does other messy jobs...

heatseeker · 10/01/2014 21:49

I do the majority of cleaning, housework and cooking but as I am a SAHM never really thought about it until recently. But as the kids are now both at school and I'm hoping to find a part time job soon, I started to think about housework and how it will be shared. I will still do the majority of housework as I will work less hours than DH, but I still think the toilet will still be my job Hmm - although I will see if we can job share!

Always ask our boys to not leave mess for me to clean up - lift seat, concentrate and aim (although DS1 managed to pee through the seat gap before bed!No idea why he was peeing whilst seated, but hopefully I'm not going to find pools of pee from now on!).

Just had a flash back to when DS1 was a baby and he pooed in the baby bath - poo in water makes me gag and it was not a formed turd Shock DH found it amusing so said next time he does it you will clean it up. Stuck to my guns next time DS1 emptied his bowels in amongst the bubbles DH was not impressed.

In fairness I don't do much DIY, apart from painting and decorating, DH is very good at DIY and he does other bits round the house.
So my new years resolution is to get more familiar with the power tools, perhaps then we can truly job share in the future!

RufusTheReindeer · 10/01/2014 22:18

I have never cleaned a toilet,

I am 44 and intend to die never having cleaned a toilet

I might have a problem if my husband dies first (he cleans the loo at the moment) but I will cross that bridge when I come to it

I agree that it would be much fairer to share that job (but don't tell him I said that)

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 10/01/2014 22:23

Omg conversation has dried up if this is the best on offer...
Sorry no offence.

ShoeWhore · 10/01/2014 22:23

We made a pact when we moved in together - I do toilet cleaning, he does bins.

Now he works away a lot so I often do the bins but not sure when he last cleaned a toilet.

He does more than his share of human and cat puke though. Maybe that evens it out?

Yama · 10/01/2014 22:24

Dh does it in this house. I have a bad back. That's not the reason he cleans the toilets, it's just the reason that I don't.

We are bringing up our children (hopefully) to be able to look after themselves, regardless of their specific genitalia.

smornintime · 10/01/2014 22:34

We share most chores fairly evenly but if I didn't do the loo it would never ever get done. When DH lived alone I think he maybe chucked bleach at it every now and again but I'm sure his mum used to do it properly when she visited. It does annoy me, especially when he has been ill and still doesn't seem to think it would be a good idea...(last time he said he would 'do it when I'm better'...er, no thanks).
In fairness I have to say he always cleans the hair (pretty much all mine) out of the plug holes because it makes me heave and I refuse to do it...I don't really know if that quite makes up for it though
