DS has uneven skin tone on legs (had it since birth). Is it ok to put bio oil on daily? Will it make a difference? DP not keen on it.

Does uneven skin tone matter?

StillaChocoholic · 09/01/2014 14:55

I wouldn't. Just let his body grow and do its thing. Uneven skin tone isn't going to harm him so leave it be. It may even out eventually. If you still think its a good idea at least ask your health visitor or gp.

ArtVandelay · 09/01/2014 14:56

I wouldnt. Consult your doctor or HV for the source of the blotchyness and possible treatment. Lots of babies are a bit blotchy, scaley, spotty etc. You should not try rubbing things on him just for cosmetic reasons imo.

kali110 · 09/01/2014 14:57

Cant see it harming him. Its very moisturising.you could put few drops in bath instead instead of using baby oil.

ArtVandelay · 09/01/2014 14:59

My midwife told me not to put anything on a baby that you can't eat. So olive oil, coconut oil etc. But babies can still come out with allergic reactions to this stuff so i really wouldnt start messing around with his skin.

specialsubject · 09/01/2014 16:41

the only place you'll find a statement that bio-oil does anything is on their website. There's no real evidence.

it has such a good press because many stretch marks fade anyway, so people think the oil is doing it.

snake oil would be better...seriously, don't bother. Take the baby to the doctor if you are worried, otherwise remember that everyone has uneven skin tone.

Kundry · 09/01/2014 16:49

It's a nice moisturiser. It won't make any difference. Everyone has uneven skin tone.

Cookethenook · 09/01/2014 17:56

Do you mean something like a birth mark? I'm not sure it would help.
Unless your baby has dry skin i wouldn't put anything on it. Even if he did have dry skin, Bio Oil is really perfumed. So much so that i can't use it on my sensitive skin.

formerbabe · 09/01/2014 17:58

I don't know why you would be bothered by uneven skin tone on a baby unless it is a medical problem or a rash in which case you don't need bio oil, you need a doctor.

KhunZhoop · 09/01/2014 17:59

Bio oil is mineral oil with a whole heap of ingredients to make it smell nice. Use plant oils instead.

Sirzy · 09/01/2014 18:05

Why does a bit of uneven skin on a baby matter?

hazeyjane · 09/01/2014 18:09

I think Bio Oil would be too harsh for a baby's skin.

fluffyraggies · 09/01/2014 18:19

I think Bio oil is not that gentle. I use it on my preg. bump as it slides nice and easily, but i wouldn't put it on sensitive/baby skin.

Why? Well, this might sound mad but when i get a cold i get a very very sore, raw nose through lots of wiping, and i can only sooth it by putting the very mildest of creams or lotions on it.

Vasaline is ok on my nose, and so is almond oil.

Baby oil, Bio oil and all the gentlest facial moisturiser stings. Even camomile nipple cream stung, and that was fine on sore nips

Cant beat the sore nose test! Grin

honeybeeridiculous · 09/01/2014 18:30

I would use olive oil. Its suitable from birth

IndigoTea · 09/01/2014 19:50

I have the same uneven skin tone, which I suspect I had from birth too, and it's such a pain now and ugly looking, I don't want him to have the same

I used Bio Oil on my DS dry skin when he was really teeny. He still suffers with it occasionally, but nothing like as bad. I would suggest doing a patch test before you start slathering it on though, just to be on the safe side Smile

hazeyjane · 09/01/2014 20:00

If you think that the uneven skin tone would be helped by moisturising, then I would imagine that any sort of moisturiser would help.

Bio Oil purports to be good at reducing scars, but IME (I have a large burn scar on my arm) and on the advice of the hcp that dealt with my burn, any moisturiser used regularly can help with scar appearance.

Is the uneven skin tone you are talking about on the level of a vitiligo style patchiness?

IndigoTea · 09/01/2014 22:46

Hazey, it's not white. It's like a shade or two darker than normal skin colour. Looks like scars.

I wouldn't even put it on my skin! Why not use coconut, almond or olive oil instead if (and I'm not suggesting it should) really matters?
