Secondary school dc attend recently became an academy.
The management company informed parents at Christmas they had offered the HT "an exiting" new role and he is now down to part time HT at our school already.
AIBU to think
That they shouldn't be taking staff from schools that need leadership (in last two years have not had good offsted)
This is quite improper
That he could have made the announcement himself.

Improper or not HT's will have career plans like the rest of us.

It happens across all the professions if you are good at your job.

jacks365 · 09/01/2014 14:29

What about the ht right to move on to new challenges too. Do you believe staff should be forced to stay in jobs against their will.

ilovesooty · 09/01/2014 14:44

It's what happens in academies.
I don't see why it's improper to deploy their staff as they see fit or why you think the HT should have announced it personally.

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 09/01/2014 16:12

Yes he should have announced it himself ilovesooty
Not a letter from the consultancy
I feels like he jumped ship only months after taking the school from LEA to academy
Career progression is natural I guess just feel he is abit thoughless to make that transition then leave straightway .

It's like relationships, you can't hold on to people who don't want to stay...

Be magnanimous and wish him good luck in his new job.

ilovesooty · 09/01/2014 16:27

If the school is part of an academy consortium it's perfectly reasonable to make announcements in this way. (I'm clearly anti academy but it's how things are)
The head therefore works within the consortium and has no need to make announcements personally to parents.
It's probably a crap set up to work in and he will need to advance his career as best he can. They'll hang him out to dry when he ceases to be flavour of the month.
The school may well not have had any choice about academy status and may not care for the way it works either.
In any event I don't see that the head needs to communicate personally with parents on this.

OpalQuartz · 09/01/2014 16:36

Are they doing it because the school didn't have good ofsteds under him and they want to make improvements?

Oblomov · 09/01/2014 16:37

YABU and you know this. Head doesn't answer to parents. Part if consortium. Nature of academy. I don't like it. But we all atleast know the rules. So why are you complaining?

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 09/01/2014 16:41

Thanks sooty . It helps to know the facts about the way things work. I am rather anti academy myself, partly because it seems so corporate, but also because I don't believe teachers are able to make decisions anymore. Perhaps I need to educate myself on this and see some positives about academies. It seems they are here to stay.

I didn't know this was the done thing tho.

I'm afraid that you summed it up with the word corporate. Academies which are part of a consortium umbrella are business and the personal communication angle doesn't exist in the same way as people previously experienced. And as Gove is determined to drive the academy agenda it will be hard to avoid them. Shit for the staff as the academies can set their own conditions. The head will have had little choice about accepting this "exciting opportunity" I imagine.

We lost our fabulous head to a secondment to a dreadful school. I know why it was done but we got the dreadful school's head. He lacks the charisma of the old head and you feel quite bored in his presence. Hopefully we'll get our head back after the 2 years.

Oblomov · 09/01/2014 17:50

Ds1 is due to go to secondary next year. The fab head has been at the failing academy part time, down the road for 2 years. Fortunatly that is now ending. So by the time ds1 gets there, fab head should be back for good and settled, thank goodness.

HighNoon · 09/01/2014 18:46

Head doesn't answer to parents. And there's the problem with the way education's going.

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 09/01/2014 18:57

Sooty - our school is now part of a consortium: Your comments have been quite eye opening infact the ht wanted to leave 2 years ago, his departure was even announced but ofsted put the school into special measures and he stayed. Parents speculated about his change of heart at the time. I do wonder now if he was pushed as a ht has already been appointed. Very quickly too.

I don't feel so annoyed now, good riddance to him . Thanks for your comments everyone .
