to take anti sickness drugs in pregnancy?

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 08/01/2014 22:05

have been prescribed for morning sickness. Have told three people all of whom who have said things like "you aren't going to take them are they?"

I feel so ill but I also can't help feeling like I might be missing something. Is it because people think they might harm the baby?

I had them, they kept me sane.

I think people worry because of thalidomide.

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 08/01/2014 22:10

which ones did you have

I had them, 10 years ago though, was in and out of hospital for the whole 9 months. Don't know what I'd of done without them. DD is 9.5 now and perfectly healthy Smile

BaileysOnRocks · 08/01/2014 22:11

No you will be fine. I had acute MS with both pregnancies, couldn't even roll over in bed without being sick so had to have the tablets. They are completely fine.
People do worry because if thadlidomine but that was before drugs were checked.

FieryChipotle · 08/01/2014 22:12

If your sickness is bad enough to warrant a prescription you need to take them! If you don't you will end up on a drip on the maternity ward for days on end... Trust me, I am a hyperemesis veteran...

BonnieBlueButler · 08/01/2014 22:12

Not unreasonable to take them at all. I had hyperemises and took 2 types of anti sickness drugs throughout my pregnancy - last dose on the day I gave birth!

I didn't feel good about taking them but the alternative was just too grim to cope with. I couldn't keep myself well without the drugs, the doctors at the hospital prescribed them, so I took them.

I really hope you begin to feel better soon - it is miserable.

Edenviolet · 08/01/2014 22:13

I took them, prochlorperazine did not agree with me at all and made me twitchy and ill, buccastem and avomine (not sure if spelt right) were ok, in my third pg I had cyclizine which made the sickness fade but caused dizziness and I had one beginning with z that was amazing and I felt normal, I can't remember the name.

Hg is horrendous so if a medication works for you take it and ignore what people say.

ladylashes · 08/01/2014 22:14

I took mine (prochloroperazine) - best thing i've done for a long time. They helped me immeasurably and I wish i'd started them sooner!!

I had lots of comments along the same lines: "You're not going to take them are you?!" but thankfully I listened to my GP instead of them Smile

Breezy1985 · 08/01/2014 22:15

I had cyclizine, if that helps. Didn't work all the time, but probably.made it a whole lot better than it would of been.

YANBU. Nothing in life is without risk.

FWIW I have just finished a course of medication which the leaflet said wasn't suitable for BFing mums. I discussed it with my doctor and the Breastfeeding Network pharmacist (who is utterly wonderful, BTW) and decided that the small risk of DD coming to harm was not greater than the risks she faced if she didn't have a fully functioning mother!

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 08/01/2014 22:19

it's so difficult to know whether they will make me feel better or not. Does anyone remember how long they take to work?

Was it Zofran hedge?

Yes that was it! I had that name in my head but kept doubting myself and was wondering if that was the bad character from toy story (also began with a z, emperor something).

Didn't want to say it and look an idiot !

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 08/01/2014 22:26

That'll be Emperor Zurg Smile

Queenofknickers · 08/01/2014 22:26

I took every type they offered me and DS age 8 is fine Smile don't suffer needlessly x

wearymum200 · 08/01/2014 22:30

I felt like that in first preg and wouldn't take anything till after end 1st trimester, resulting in 1 month off work, fainting every time I stood and finally GP wanting to admit me for intravenous fluids.
2nd time I had a toddler and couldn't imagine coping with him and sickness like that again, so took cyclizine as soon as I started to feel proper sick (struggling to remember how early that was, maybe 5 weeks). Kept going until I din't fell sick any more, maybe 22 weeks? DD2 is now 5 and like all those above, appears fine!

leavesalmondoutofit · 08/01/2014 22:32

whateverareyoutalkingabout search for Hyperemesis on the main site. It is a fab thread that has been around for a long time supporting ladies like yourself. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and look forward to your baby being born

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/01/2014 22:36

I was on Cyclizine and metaclopramide for months during my pregnancy. You are not unreasonable in the slightest. Some folk don't have a clue what they are talking about - especially when hyperemesis can actually be dangerous people coming out with such nonsense winds me up!

Slutbucket · 08/01/2014 22:37

Hi had cyclizine I could just about keep things down. Anybody who questions if you would take it have only had morning sickness not . I had a twin pregnancy and my babies needed all the nutrition I could give. The risk of the medicine was no way as nearer a risk as becoming malnourished and dehydrated.

ElBombero · 08/01/2014 22:37

I took cyclizine and metoclopromide for DS1, really needed them and no adverse affects here. As with the other millions who've used them

MurderOfGoths · 08/01/2014 22:39

With DS I took Cyclizine, Stemetil, Buccastem and Metachloperamide. With current pregnancy it's Ondansetron and steroids.

YANBU at all, it's horrible feeling so rotten all the time and it doesn't serve a purpose being so sick.

Slutbucket · 08/01/2014 22:40

Sorry really don't know what happened with the above past but it doesn't make a lot of sense! Take the drugs and don't listen to anybody who had a touch of morning sickness.

TheBigJessie · 08/01/2014 22:41

They're worried about thalidomide. That tragedy happened in the fifties and was a new drug. The ones you're being prescribed have been fully tested and tried by thousands of women.

Take them and don't worry about the advice of your medically unqualified friends and family, who pronably don't even grasp how awful hyperemesis is.
