To complain about Gangnam Style for kids

middleclassdystopia · 08/01/2014 15:35

Gangnam style(or whatever the hell it's called) has been played at my ds school and my dd pre-school several times at various events over the last year or so.

Okay on one level it's just a pop song, it's catchy and kids that age don't understand the lyrics.

However, whilst i'm no prude, I can't help objecting to my kids singing 'hey sexy lady'

I try to teach equality to my children and I find these lyrics misogynistic.

I feel like complaining, what's wrong with a whole range of other music? Seeing a bunch of 4 year old girls singing this and swaying their hips just seems wrong to me.

YANBU yes its just a catchy song but Id be uncomfortable with little boys singing 'hey sexy lady' too.

I have previously been at a soft play and heard preschool girls singing along to the music in there (rhiana) "i may be bad but I'm perfectly good at it,sex in the air i don't care i love the smell of it, sticks and stones may break my bones but whips and chains excite me i like it like it come on' and more recently that awful Robin Thicke between the ears x

maddy68 · 08/01/2014 15:57

I agree with you too, but it is a catchy doing and I'm sure they have heard it elsewhere. It's played everywhere

candycoatedwaterdrops · 08/01/2014 15:59

My friend's a teacher, she plays the music that the kids request and will acquiesce (within reason, so not 'Blurred lines') so perhaps the kids are asking for this song?

mollypup · 08/01/2014 16:00

Ah, reminds me of the days when we all used to dance innocently to 'sex on the beach' at primary school discos.

P.S. I turned out alright!

OvO · 08/01/2014 16:01

My DS's love the song and dance so I told them sexy is a grown up word and to sing "hey pretty lady." No doubt I've been eye rolled behind my back but I don't care.

CrazyOldCatLady · 08/01/2014 16:02

My 3 year old has been dancing to this in creche lately. I'm not happy at all but don't feel I can say anything as it's the only creche we can really use, being in the middle of nowhere.

dotty2 · 08/01/2014 16:02

I agree too - hate casual sex references in songs deemed appropriate for children. Do people not listen to lyrics?

Damnautocorrect · 08/01/2014 16:02

My ds sings 'heyyyyyy sexy lady' alllllll the time. He's 4. It annoys me but there's always a song like that

fluffyanimal · 08/01/2014 16:04

DS2 is 4 and doesn't understand what the words mean, so he sings "Hey such a lady". Puts a whole new spin on it!

SPsFifthConyoIsTheBestConyo · 08/01/2014 16:04

This does not bother me.

There are worse songs out there. Plus I grew up with Spice Girls singing "2 become 1" and Venga Boys wanting to "Boom, Boom, I want you in mu room"

Singing "hey, sexy lady" is nothing.

HeinzDoofenshmirtz · 08/01/2014 16:06

YANBU

TheDoctorsNewKidneys · 08/01/2014 16:07

It's no different to what was played at discos in the nineties, and no doubt what was played at discos in the seventies and eighties too.

I remember requesting Mysterious Girl by Peter Andre at a disco when I was about 9, and listening to "Sex on the Beach" and like SP I remember that Boom Boom Boom Boom song by the Vengaboys. Oh, and Sex Bomb by Ricky Martin.

It doesn't bother me at all.

GoofyIsACow · 08/01/2014 16:08

My five year old sings 'heeeeeey sister lady' i just havent corrected him!

To be honest, he is usually too busy throwing himself around the room enthusiastically to listen to the lyrics! Grin

I do see your point but i think there are probably bigger issues.

Pointeshoes · 08/01/2014 16:11

They just like the songs, don't understand the meanings.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 08/01/2014 16:11

I hate hearing it come out of little children's mouths too, but I can also vividly remember singing 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy' by Rod Stewart when I was a child

Blurred Lines is just repulsive though.

GlitzAndGiggles · 08/01/2014 16:11

I taught my nephew to sing "heyyyy such a lady" he's 3 and none the wiser :)

FlatFacedArmy · 08/01/2014 16:11

Lol Goofy you've just reminded me of my beloved MIL singing a popular song a few years ago when we went to visit... "I"m your honey, honey honey honey, SO honey, honey honey honey tonight"...

I will never forget the look on DH's face.

FlatFacedArmy · 08/01/2014 16:12

Needless to say, we didn't correct her...

enderwoman · 08/01/2014 16:13

I'm older than some of the posters here but "our song " was Like a Virgin

GlitzAndGiggles · 08/01/2014 16:13

I remember innocently singing "it wasn't me" by Shaggy..."picture this we were both butt naked banging on the bathroom floor". Oh I still remember the slap off my mum lol

CoffeeTea103 · 08/01/2014 16:14

Yabu and a bit ott. The kids don't even know what they're saying, they hardly thinking what you've expressed. It's a catchy song which I've seen both boys and girls have fun with.

CuntyBunty · 08/01/2014 16:14

You're about a year behind the times.

WidowWadman · 08/01/2014 16:15

I'm still waiting for the Horrible Histories people to do a spoof - "Hey Saxon Lady"

GoofyIsACow · 08/01/2014 16:16

Grin flatfaced!!
