It is slightly rude for the person in the room with you not to say bless you.

Wasn't brought up with 'bless-yous', don't do them at home and find them a bit irritating if a stranger blesses me in public as I'm a serial sneezer and seldom send out less than 3, by which time the blesser has started to run out of goodwill and just hopes they won't catch anything.

Never ever thought of it as rude to omit the blessing, tbh - if anything, as the sneezer I'd find it less intrusive if people didn't refer to it. I do sometimes apologise for sneezing, though, if it's interrupted anything.

I never say bless you. One of my children does, I don't know why.

Shitehawke · 08/01/2014 14:30

Honestly, I hate this whole thing! Its just a way for bored strangers/office chatterboxes/lonely old people to get in my face and strike up conversation.

Besides, my soul abandoned me long ago!!

MaidOfStars · 08/01/2014 15:15

Should I be apologising for sneezing?

I suppose if you accidentally hit someone in the face with a lump of snot that unexpectedly dislodges itself, then it might be polite to offer a word of apology?

Apologies for sneezing are probably polite if you interrupt a conversation/meeting/etc.

What of coughing?

BaileysOnRocks · 08/01/2014 15:18

Oh, I can't stand it when people say 'bless you'
People actually know not to say it to me because I just find it annoying, especially after the tenth sneeze!! ConfusedConfused

mrspremise · 08/01/2014 16:58

I just say 'Bendith' automatically if I hear someone sneeze. I can't help it, it's like an autonomic response. Blush

Heartbrokenmum73 · 08/01/2014 17:02

Yes, I'm another one of those who does a whole string of sneezes (can we have a thread about that? Strange phenomenon!) and it does get silly when I'm on sneeze number 7.

My brother always says 'er, hel-LO?' if he sneezes and no one says bless you Confused
