to ask if you or anyone you know has had fusion of the lower vertebrae?

Sorry, I did post in health but had no responses.

After suffering from back problems for ages my poor DP has just been advised by her consultant that fusing her lower vertebrae is the best option. She wants to feel better and to have less pain but is terrified of the surgery. Does anyone have experience of this op? Thanks

Hi I know you posted in health but there is a good back problems thread on there, called The Back Story where all the knowledgeable ladies are. I know some have had ops. Sorry I can't help more I have a bad back right now and it is very difficult to be in pain and have to limit what you do all the time.

I have had 6 ops, the last being a fusion.

What level are they suggesting fusion?

The recovery for me was difficult, but the nerve pain has nearly resolved (my last op was about 6 years ago). I doubt I will ever get full sensation back, though.

All in all, I think having the op was a good choice, but for me, after having had 5 done prior, it was also a last resort.

I would be hesitant if the first procedure being recommended was a fusion...

After many different approaches to constant lower back pain I had a successful discetomy but I had the luxury of choosing the surgeon after a lot of research. While we were still discussing treatment approaches I mentioned fusions and he was so scathing and of the opinion that it was a scam that no matter what pain I may be in I wouldn't even consider it. Can your DP get a second opinion?

I broke my back in an accident 14 years ago while I was in my twenties. Two of my vertebrae cracked and the disc collapsed completely.

I experienced severe and chronic pain for many years which doctors did not want to treat surgically due to my age and limited success rate of the operation. No amount of other treatments helped (physio, steroid injections, nerve blocks etc).

I was referred to another orthopaedic surgeon in desperation who strongly advised me to have my spine fused at L5/S1. There was a 50/50 chance I might not be able to walk again, same risk for bladder/bowel problems.

At the time I was in my late twenties and was more than willing to take the risk because I knew I could not live the rest of my life in that amount of pain.

The operation took 4 hours. When I woke up my back pain had gone; it was replaced by post-op pain which was not pleasant but far less painful than my back pain had been.

I was on my feet after 48 hours, discharged from hospital after 5 days and back at work within 6 months. I found the worst bit was having the external staples taken out after 10 days.

I get niggles in damp weather but this is nothing compared to the pain I was in previously. It's certainly an operation that needs careful consideration. I was under no illusion of the risks involved, however I strongly believe the surgery gave me my life back.

PM me if you want details of my surgeon, obviously I think he's amazing.
