To book a holiday this week and hope the first day of term is an inset day?

Looking at when the kids go back to school after the summer this year, it appears ours are going back on Friday 5th September, but the county council term dates thing states: "We advise schools book this day as an inset day".

Now, looking at booking a holiday (only a cheapo thing in the uk) and that week is a couple of hundred pounds cheaper than the other weeks. We can afford to go this week but can't afford any other. Would you take the risk that the school may not decide to have the Friday as an inset day? We'd only be able to go Monday to Friday anyway so would be a shame to have to come home early, although I guess this would be an option. School will not confirm yet whether or not they are booking it as an inset, and it need to book the holiday as it's on a special offer price that I can actually afford!

He's in year 3, or year 4 in September so will be the same school as he's in at the minute. I've just booked it so no going back now!

As a teacher I say book it! It wil 99% be an inset. If not, in all honesty the holiday will be more valuable than that 1st day. A week is a different matter, but one day- go for it!

Whata i'm a teacher too, we are back on the 1/9 this year (but it is inset)

Find out what the fine would be and work out if the holiday would still be cheaper

Hob I've never even had an inset that early.

I guess it will come one day then :-)

Hobnobissupersweet Derbyshire are going back on the 5th :)

roamer2 fine is £60, if I had to pay one, so less than the £220 extra I'd pay for a holiday the week before!

Seems really strange children starting back on a Friday! One day's school, then a weekend! Surely teachers would hate that and be glad to have INSET instead. But also Monday 8th seems quite late to start back. I'd book it.
