Freedom of speech

Did anyone see BB last night?

I dont know their names but a man was telling a woman that he didnt agree with people being Gay because its written in the Bible that its not allowed. He got a verbal warning from BB for this conversation.
AIBU to think that we have freedom of speech in this country and as he was only stating that HE didnt agree with it they should not have given him a VW.

Freedom of speech doesn't cover being racist, homophobic or sexist. For which we should all be eternally grateful

I disagree. I think FOS should cover these things.

Total FOS is sacrosanct in the USA. I wish we had similar rights protected in a constitution.

Ubik1 · 06/01/2014 18:03

I agree redshifter

MurderOfGoths · 06/01/2014 18:06

red Why?

MaidOfStars · 06/01/2014 18:07

I agree redshifter and Ubik1.

puzzleduck · 06/01/2014 18:08

It is "his" opinion based on his faith. He should be allowed to voice his opinion.
If a gay guy said I don't believe in being heterosexual would there be such uproar?

OP posts:
redshifter · 06/01/2014 18:09

Censure quickly turns into censor.

In reality it is just another form of censor.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2014 18:09

Does FOS in the US really mean that you can say what you want on a TV show without them having any editorial control?

nennypops · 06/01/2014 18:11

I'm astonished that people here think we should all be free to go round expressing racist or homophobic hatred. If you saw a group of people on the street shouting at a black person something like "Go home [N word), f* off you (W word)", with the black person being visibly upset, would you seriously be thinking "Great, freedom of speech in action"?

MurderOfGoths · 06/01/2014 18:11

"If a gay guy said I don't believe in being heterosexual would there be such uproar?"

If he said it could be "cured" then yes, probably.

So all of you happy with it, happy to have someone come into your home and say nasty shit then and not have the right to ask them to stop or leave?

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2014 18:13

Rubbish. It's the flip side of freedom of speech. Someone can express a homophobic viewpoint; someone else can strongly criticize it.

MaidOfStars · 06/01/2014 18:13

No, not at all. Sinead O'Connor had pretend that she wasn't actually going to rip up the Pope's photograph live on air. Editorial control will be applied as befits the political persuasions of the broadcaster/producer.

I guess it's something of an irony that Big Brother purports to be about exposing the bare (and often distasteful) bones of its participants.

puzzleduck · 06/01/2014 18:13

Murderofgoths, funny you should say that considering your username.

redshifter · 06/01/2014 18:14

MurderOfGoths

Maybe it is that Voltaire thing.

I feel very strongly about this.

Ifmsomeone said on BB that they thought child rape was a good thing. I would like to think I would defend with my life their right to say it. And wouldn't want them even censured

nennypops · 06/01/2014 18:14

If a gay guy said I don't believe in being heterosexual would there be such uproar?

What uproar? Holyfield was just asked not to carry on like that. And I'm quite sure that a gay person saying that would receive the same response. But, be realistic, how many gay people have you ever come across saying anything like that?

And he didn't say he didn't believe in being homosexual, he said it was wrong and abnormal, a matter of choice, and something which gay people should want to be "cured" of.

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/01/2014 18:15

op

Having a "faith" doesn't give anybody the excuse to be a cunt.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2014 18:16

Simple concept... if you don't like equal marriage for gay people, don't marry someone of the same sex as you. If you don't think homosexuality is wrong, don't sleep with anyone of the same gender as you. Don't like abortion, don't have one. No sex before marriage, don't have any.

If he had said women are wrong and every one should have a sex change or that Black people are wrong and they should all have skin bleach, I think we would all understand the stupid, illogical, nasty, bigoted shot that this is.

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/01/2014 18:17

Also sexuality is real and cannot be changed.

Having a faith is making the active choice to believe in the big man in the sky. And occasionally use said faith to be unpleasant and bigoted.

I know whose feelings I consider more important.

nennypops · 06/01/2014 18:17

Redshifter, people are entitled to say homophobic things in the privacy of their own homes or indeed other people's homes, if said people allow it. Said people are however perfectly free to say they won't allow it. The same applies to commercial companies putting out public TV programmes.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2014 18:17

And wouldn't want them even censured
seriously? Confused You think someone should be able to say something like that and not be criticized or disapproved of?

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2014 18:18

I second Errol's Hmm.

Sirzy · 06/01/2014 18:18

Exactly MrsTP

Ubik1 · 06/01/2014 18:18

Nennypops

I think we should have the right to hear what that person has to say.

Radical, I know.

I think freedom if speech us more important than the tight not yo be offended.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2014 18:18

Sorry Confused the Hmm is my own.

redshifter · 06/01/2014 18:20

I think we would all understand the stupid, illogical, nasty, bigoted shot that this is.

I agree. He is. But I defend his right to express his ridiculous and disgusting beliefs.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2014 18:20

I think we should have the right to hear what that person has to say

You are - if he wants to say more on the subject he can elsewhere.
