Puppy jumping up whilst muddy

I may well be unreasonable, but I can't help thinking the other man was unrealistic.

We live in a very rural area that has had a lot of rain. There are normal dog walking routes where I have been walking my 15 week old Labrador puppy. The routes are through fields and woods and streams.

We met a man who was also walking (without a dog) on our way home from an hour walk whilst in a field. My puppy was wet and muddy. She jumped up at the man, who in turn shouted at me.

I said sorry but afterwards thought, well you are walking in a field in a very rural area.

Keep her on a lead when you see other people if you can't stop her jumping on them yet.

sunshinemeg · 06/01/2014 15:18

As a dog owner myself I agree with the man. You should have your dog under control not to do that. If it's likely to happen then the dog should be on a lead.

squeakytoy · 06/01/2014 15:20

YABU. Why on earth should he not be upset at a muddy dog covering his clothes in dirt. Keep your dog on a lead if you cant keep it under control.

Or dont be surprised if your dog ends up getting attacked when it bounds up to another dog and jumps at that.

MushroomSoup · 06/01/2014 15:20

I agree with the man and I'm the owner of two young dirty muddy jumpy pups!

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/01/2014 15:21

Always pisses me off when a muddy dog jumps up at me.

And I have a muddy dog. I would be horrified if he put his muddy paws all over someone!

Slubberdegullion · 06/01/2014 15:22

YABU

Muddy Dog paws mud gets much higher up than inner knee above the trouser welly mud (technical dog walkers' terminology).

15 weeks you should have the start of decent recall, sit and wait with a Labrador. Need to hold onto your dog's collar or put her on the lead if she is a jumper upper.

aderynlas · 06/01/2014 15:24

I wouldnt mind op, but maybe if you see someone coming toward you, you could put your puppy on a lead. Have fun, muddy walk through fields sounds great.

Youcanringmybell · 06/01/2014 15:25

YABU - is your dog on a lead? If your dog is prone to jumping up (as all puppies are) I would wait for the man to pass holding onto my dog. Jumping up is rude!
I bet your dog is cute though Smile

Morgause · 06/01/2014 15:30

YABU - did you offer to get his clothes cleaned?

DoJo · 06/01/2014 15:33

I'd be pissed off if any dog, muddy or not, jumped up at me whilst I was out walking. You are responsible for teaching them not to do so, and if they are not yet trained then you need to keep them on a lead until they are.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 06/01/2014 15:35

Sorry but YABU. I had a very jumpy muddy puppy and I knew he'd want to leap, so he was kept on a tighter lead when I saw people approaching. He soon learnt not to jump though! Only took 5 years

candycoatedwaterdrops · 06/01/2014 15:35

Was he off lead btw?

HaroldTheGoat · 06/01/2014 15:36

Even walking through a rural area you shouldn't have to expect a muddy dog to jump on you.

Saying that shit happens I wouldn't lose my rag over it.

ephemeralfairy · 06/01/2014 15:36

I don't like dogs jumping up at me muddy or not. Keep it on a lead!!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2014 15:36

Sorry, YABU. You need to keep your pup under closer control until you've trained her not to jump up.

Apart from the mud, it can be scary for some people (esp small children) and puppy claws can scratch. My DD adores dogs but really didn't like pups jumping up at her when she was smaller.

VikingVagine · 06/01/2014 15:37

Also a puppy owner here, if you can't stop him from jumping up at people, you should have him on a lead. YABU.

YABU jumpy puppies are annoying to a lot of people.

CoffeeTea103 · 06/01/2014 15:41

Yabu, the man was right to react that way, you should not allow your dog to jump on people.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2014 15:44

Well, I wouldn't say he was 'right' to react that way - always better to be polite rather than shout. But understandable that he should be annoyed.

YABU. I'd be fuming in his position.

SoupDragon · 06/01/2014 15:54

YABU.

My dog is always on a lead due to a faulty recall. I also pull him to one side of paths when people approach as he is extremely bouncy and loves to jump at people. It is never OK to allow your dog to jump up as another person.

PumpkinPositive · 06/01/2014 15:55

Unless I was wearing a wedding dress, I wouldn't mind. But then, I'm dog mad. Grin Man was not unreasonable to be annoyed. Keep junior on a lead until she learns not to jump.

WaitMonkey · 06/01/2014 15:57

YABVU and very rude. I would have been furious. I hope you apologized to him and offered to pay his cleaning bill.
