To hope there's a way to loose wieght other than low carb?

I am psyching myself up to try a low carb diet as I need to loose a stone. I do like many low carb meals but sometimes I long for some pasta, pizza, rice and bread.
Now it's January there is a lot of information out there about whole food groups that are 'bad' such as sugar. Id like to get to the point where I can have the occasional doughnut without stressing.

if you struggle to put weight ON, you need to look at what SORT of calories you are eating and go see your doctor incase you are hyperthyroid

ViviPru · 05/01/2014 19:16

I calorie count with myfitnesspal.

When I want to get in shape I make sure my total calorie intake (less exercise) for any one day is no more than 1280cals, aided by 5 exercise classes a week and eating a very balanced healthy diet INCLUDING carbs. It's challenging, but possible. Certainly easier for me than low-carbing. I consistently lose 1 lb a week when I'm faithful to this.

I lost 3 stone last year this way.

Artandco · 05/01/2014 19:16

1891 calories apparently.

I have been to doctors before and they tested and just said I just need to eat more... It's a struggle though. I'm not very good at seeing what's in what , but everything I eat is full fat etc. ie today.
Breakfast - x2 poached eggs with ham and hollandase sauce on bagel. Glass milk
Lunch- pasta, mushrooms/ tomatoes/ peppers/ cheese
Dinner- grilled chilli chicken, creamed spinach, broccoli

I think that's more than 1891??

blackandwhiteandredallover · 05/01/2014 19:17

I agree with my fitness pal- I have been doing it since new year and lost 3lb already (admittedly that was the xmas bloat). You put in your weight and how much you want to lose and it tells you how many calories you should have per day. It has really helped me realise how many snacks I have been eating too, and how many calories there are in wine Sad And the app is free!

frenchfancy · 05/01/2014 19:21

Artandco to check your TDEE see Here I'm guessing you must be VERY active as even on the most active your TDEE is 2223 cals/day.

The other thing to look out for (which is also true for those losing weight, but in the opposite way) is portion control. It is no good knowing that a portion of cereal is 250cals, if you have never weighed it out and seen what 30g looks like. The same goes for everything else, especially pasta and potatoes.

I'm another 5:2 advocate. It has changed my life.

Artandco · 05/01/2014 19:27

French - I clicked moderately active

WilsonFrickett · 05/01/2014 19:28

5:2 works for me, and while I don't restrict my carbs on non-fast days I am mindful of what I eat and basically try to get the most 'bang for my buck'. So wholemeal bread fills me up for longer than white bread, so we eat that. But I hate wholemeal pasta so won't even have it in the house. It's all about balance.

On fast days I do tend to avoid carbs as they are (generally) higher calorie foods and so I find I can eat more for my 500 cals if I restrict carbs - however I still don't cut them out completely and will often have one of those wholewheat sandwich thins as a base for a skinny pizza, for eg.

A really good first step for me was to eat 'normally' for a week but use my fitness pal to calculate how many calories I was eating. There were definite quick wins, especially around portion size.

Exercise is the key though, not just for weight but for health.

Get thee to Slimming world, you won't regret it.

doitmyself · 05/01/2014 19:30

I went wheat and grain free when diagnosed with coeliacs so was sort of low carb. 2 stone just fell off without any effort at all despite all the cheese, double cream etc that I eat.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 05/01/2014 19:42

Sugar is our enemy, read the ingredients list on the back of all packs and you'd stop eating all processed food and the weight would drop off.

On a more reasonable level, calorie count or do 5:2 works.. 5:2 takes some getting used to but works although I have felt like chomping my arm off before routibe set in.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 05/01/2014 19:42

Another Slimming World member here!
Ive lost nearly 60lbs eating plenty of carbs.
Its brilliant.

WorraLiberty · 05/01/2014 19:45

OP just eat pasta, pizza, rice and bread but eat a lot less of it.

Cut out alcohol and do some rigorous daily exercise.

Everything in moderation is far more likely to work (though you need to stick to it!) because it's a lifestyle change rather than a 'diet'.

Good luck

binger · 05/01/2014 19:45

Portion sizes. I had a hypno band (hypnotherapy) fitted 2 years ago. I eat little and often now and have maintained my weight. I lost 1 1/2 stone fairly quickly and it has stayed off as I still eat little and often. Other diets work of course but this was the only method which has lasted for me, also there was no effort involved which was the best bit - no forbidden foods I just can't physically stuff myself now.

TambaMelchior · 05/01/2014 19:50

I don't know whether this has been mentioned already but I have been following Paul.Mckenna's I Can Make You Thin Method for the last 3 years and I can eat whatever I want and stay a healthy size 10. Providing you follow the 4 simple rules any food is permitted.

fatlazymummy · 05/01/2014 19:52

I lost 4 stones, and have maintained for nearly 2 years, whilst eating bread every single day. I also eat potatoes, pasta and rice.I do watch my portion sizes though. For bread I usually have 1 wholemeal pitta, or 2 small slices of wholemeal, or similar. For rice/ pasta I would have about 2 oz. dry weight, which seems a tiny amount at 1st, but you soon get used to it.
I have looked at low carb diets, TBH they make me feel a little bit sick. I'm a vegetarian (apart from 1 serving of fish/week) and I just don't want to eat meat substitutes like quorn, or hundreds of eggs. I find fatty foods gross.
I think you just have to find a way of eating that suits you. Obviously cutting out the crap - sweets, takeaways, kebabs, deep pan pizzas etc is the main thing, but otherwise eat the foods that you enjoy, cooked with healthier ingredients and in smaller portions.

giraffesCantSledge · 05/01/2014 20:01

Yes! As a veggie I find it hard to low carb. Last year I lost 3 stone!

BikeRunSki · 05/01/2014 20:03

Slimming World helped me lose 3 stone. I ate loads of pasta, still do. And rice. The odd pizza. A year later it's still off.

MissSingerbrains · 05/01/2014 23:11

I eat loads of carbs - can't imagine life without them, and would not do a diet that would restrict them (or anything else really!), so I've been calorie counting with MFP and exercising a lot. Lost 2 stone and am now maintaining it, while eating the occasional doughnut :)

cleofatra · 05/01/2014 23:26

definitely OP, low carb doesnt work for me
