WIBU to ask if this woman knows she has Leukocoria (white eye reflection)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leukocoria

She's a neighbour I met for the first time yesterday. I thought it was unusual when I met her yesterday, and she asked us over for coffee this morning - I noticed it again. Basically with - I think - both her eyes you get a white reflection back from the back of they eye - sort of like redeye in a photo - but white. It wasn't cataracts as it wasn't milky or at the front. Perhaps one of you knows more about this than me, but I am guessing she and her family all know about it.

The only thing is I have read of people having this noticed by other people (from a photo in one case) - and it's an indicator of an eye cancer (retinoblastoma).

is it something that people just 'have'??

Mention it, someone apparently suspected my medical condition but didn't feel it was there place to say, it might of helped steer my doctors in the right direction a lot faster if they had!

Bloody hell, well done for mentioning it Deste, glad they took it seriously. It must have been difficult to say as nobody wants to be the bearer of possible bad news, but thank god you spoke up.

Fingers crossed for your friends deste, and whatever happens it is better for something awful to be found and treated than to progress beyond help. You have done a brilliant thing. If it is something serious then it is likely that everything will progress very quickly now which may be a major shock to everyone but is normal if it is a retinoblastoma.

The website given above www.chect.org.uk/cms/ is excellent, both for information and support.

Their campaign to spread the word about leukocoria and retinoblastoma is good, but not as widely spread as I would like. It would be great if a site with as much reach as mumsnet got involved...

Incidentally any optometrist can look at your child's eyes if you are worried or suspect leukocoria. An optometrist will have the necessary equipment and training to have a look and to refer onwards if needed.

Childrens eye tests are free under the NHS, so anyone with any concerns should consider having their children checked.

Littlegreyauditor, I am going to send you a message - please look out for it.

happynewday · 10/01/2014 11:54

Well done deste, you did the right thing. Even if it is RB, it's one of the most treatable childhood cancers. Sending your friends my best wishes.

I had it when I was younger.
