Despite being more than a bit off key?

I love singing but people ask me not to.

It says 'everyone welcome' but I suspect that they might laugh at me.

Should I?

yanbu. go for it.

they'll train you if you've got potential.

It really is good for you. I was in a very strange place a few years ago - I had a bout of quite moderate depression - and without choir (among other factors) I may have taken a lot longer to get back om track. I have more confidence these days too and that is down to singing, am certain of it.

I am a huge advocate for choral singing

There are very few people who can't sing in tune so you're probably not as bad as you think. Go for it!

Miranda79 · 04/01/2014 22:48

Go for it! You have just inspired me to contact my local choral society (and I haven't been in a choir for 20 years!).

I've been singing in a choir for the last 6/12, having not sung since school 30 years ago. Really enjoying it!

Yes, go for it. I joined a community choir 4 years and it has really enriched my life and definitely helps keep depression at bay. I must say though, it is easier if you can read music & I can't! Ours is also very cheap £40 subs per year.

What everyone else has said. If it's a non-auditioning choir they will be used to singers of all abilities and experience, and the musical director will know how to help you sing in tune. They wouldn't say that everyone was welcome if it wasn't so. I'm in a community choir, and it's the most welcoming bunch of people you could meet - and I felt the same as you before joining, but needn't have worried. Go for it!

Another one saying go for it.

Many community choirs don't use written music (aka dots) at all, and teach only by listen and repeat.

See if their song choices appeal to you. If you don't much like the sort of music they do it may be worth trying other community choirs in the area.

I'm very much looking forward to choir starting again on Monday, after the Christmas hols, I've really missed it!
