Sorry the title is very emotive, I ran out of room to explain it properly.

its something that has always bothered, especially that its something that since i was a young child I know has gone one within society, people seeing nothing wrong in watching horror films in front of young children.
i have been around people who have almost done this infront of my children, switching on a horror film with children in the room and looked at me like I was mad when I went crazy at the thought. It's scary how prevalent it is and has been for many generations.
I actually said once "would you watch porn infront of a child' and they all replied with a chorus of 'of course not !"
Aibu to think theres not a huge amount of difference? its both 18 rated material for a reason?

It is definitely abusive to watch horror films in front of children.

Ubik1 · 04/01/2014 17:20

Or even better get your thread deleted first...then read a book

HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:20

theres been some really abusive posts, if your that offended pm me or something don't post bile because they haven't bothered to read what i actually put but have enough time be abusive fgs.

Report the thread & ask MNHQ to change it.

HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:23

i thought my description would have made it clear, theres no more room thats not fault,

its a shame i've had to waste some much time and typing space to address people who have completely derailed the thread, on an important issue and used it as a platform to be abusive and self righteous.

OP posts:
Mintyy · 04/01/2014 17:24

Oh dear Lord, why do people have to be so fucking literal all the time? Op's opening post makes it perfectly clear what she means even though the thread title is misleading. But, no, we have to have the usual hysterical pile-on. Embarrassing.

Mintyy · 04/01/2014 17:25

Although, Howling Trap, you can have extremely long thread titles on Mumsnet. Just keep typing.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 04/01/2014 17:26

I've re-read the replies and I don't see anything abusive, perhaps angry.

report to hq.

HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:26

what? really? oh right extra apologies then I didn't know that.

OP posts:
horsetowater · 04/01/2014 17:27

I think allowing children to watch inappropriate material, is legally neglect, mental abuse if it is deliberate, and therefore can be legally defined as child abuse. allowing them to watch porn is sexual abuse if deliberate, if accidental it is neglect but can very easily seen as abuse depending on the reaction of the child. If the child shows abuse images to others then they can be charged with child sexual abuse.

HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:30

I have done, although its not sweary some people are literally calling me a minimiser of child sexual abuse, which is appalling and they need to be punished for it you can't throw stuff like that around.

making Ian Watkins bad taste jokes or Jimmy Saville jokes are horrifically minimising child abuse, not a thread like this. Hmm

OP posts:
Mintyy · 04/01/2014 17:31

There are several abusive replies. I strongly suspect some of them are deliberately obtuse because certain posters love an excuse to be outraged and flash the old Angry faces around.

HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:31

I've reported the title , do they change it or you?

OP posts:
HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:34

thankyou minty and the other posters on here who understood what I meant.

OP posts:
happytalk13 · 04/01/2014 17:34

Im afraid your post could easily be seen as minimising child sex abuse. Showing children porn is sex abuse and you final sentence, which comes across as a rhetorical question, likens that to showing a child a horror movie,

Sallystyle · 04/01/2014 17:39

FFS

It was obvious what the OP was trying to get at if you read her OP.

Not a great title but it was quite obvious she meant both should be seen as abuse, not that having sex with a child is anything like making a kid watch a horror movie.

I guess giving the OP the benefit of the doubt isn't as fun as being an arse to her though.

FreyaFridays · 04/01/2014 17:41

Wow, OP... just... wow.

Some people may have jumped on you a bit, but god, your thread title is SERIOUSLY inappropriate. You really should have titled it something completely different if you thought you couldn't fit your whole theory in. I don't believe for a second that you didn't see how inflammatory and offensive (and yes, minimising of child abuse) it was.

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/01/2014 17:42

Minty, I would hardly call 40 posts on AIBU in 5 hours "hysterical piling on". She compared watching horror movies with paedophilia. From the OP's 17:18 post: I was talking about actually sex with children.

She asked AIBU and was told yes. There is hysteria on this thread, but from where I'm sitting it is coming from the OP.

Inertia · 04/01/2014 17:42

Though ( as you have realised ) the comparison was ill- advised, I do agree with you that watching horror films with children can be abusive / neglectful . Obviously there are very different degrees of horror , but in my view subjecting children to extreme or sadistic horror or violent films is as bad as subjecting them to films with sexual content - i.e. neither is acceptable. The wide acceptance of graphic violence images in our society bothers me, tbh.

Films are classified - by professionals - for a very good reason.

HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:43

horror movies desensitizes children in the same way! happy thats why violent horror films are called torture porn! the dynamic of the images are very similar thats the issue.

would anyone phone the police if they found out that someone had watched material like that infront their young child?

OP posts:
HowlingTrap · 04/01/2014 17:45

*I meant I wasn't comparing Dione, i had to make loads of posts just to deal with these people,

OP posts:
BoneyBackJefferson · 04/01/2014 17:46

Also notorious child murderers without exception were all shown graphic violence (islington boys snuff films:O) as children.

Some not all.

Probably the stupidest thread I've ever read on Mumsnet.
I remember as a child watching Dracula and my dad booing out the window when I went to feed the rabbit in the dark. It gave me the fright of my life and I laugh about it now.
And you think children sexually assaulted is equal to that?
