To be really upset by scumbag thieves

My second bicycle in 3 weeks has been stolen from the local train station. Both were secured at the bike stands on the platform with a kryptonite cable and d lock. The cables had been cut through. Apparently the CCTV footage is hopeless. I am so upset that these opportunistic scumbags help themselves so the things that DH and I work so hard to be able to afford. I barely break even doing my job with an expensive commute and 2 DCs in childcare, now it seems I have to factor in theft of bicycles as an added cost. Until it replace the bike I'll have to walk to the station meaning I now leave the house at 5.30am instead of 6.

That's really annoying for you. If this is so commonly happening at the same place, the station should do more and make sure their cctv is not rubbish. I'd ask the police to check this - it might be that someone at the station is allowing this to happen.

That's awful. Gits. Hope they fall off it in a painful and embarrassing manner while cycling it to wherever they sell it on.

Is it worth getting a second hand crap bike for the commute so no one wants it? And keeping your better bike for fun?

MakeTeaNotWar · 04/01/2014 08:45

Yes will def get a rubbish bike and expensive lock. Yesterday's was a nice one DH had bought me for Xmas and it was the firs time I used it :-( It's just not right that this is happening

That's really awful. Two bikes in two in three weeks!

Did you get it marked by the police? It makes them easier identify should they be retrieved. Could you get a cheap second hand bike? It may deter an opportunist from stealing your new bike when you get it.

That's so annoying and would make me very angry.
The suggestions so far are good.
I know it's cumbersome but I've seen people take a wheel off the bike & take it with. It's more difficult to carry than just ride off with it.
Because it was locked I think the turds (I mean theives) were prepared.
Go to police, what's the point of CCTV if it's unhelpful what if there was a really serious incident? ; not suggesting this isn't ... If you see what I mean.
Can you claim in insurance and what does credit card cover for stolen items if applicable.

YANBU to be upset, but it sounds like your bike wasn't actually secured by the D Lock?

Could you take the bike on the train with you? Might be easier with a fold up bike?

C3P0 · 04/01/2014 10:46

Maybe get a Brompton?

MakeTeaNotWar · 04/01/2014 10:52

tep you are right and I feel like a fool - I had a cable looped through the wheels and to the post and the d lock secured this. Because my last bike had just been stolen, I invested in the best lock I could afford and turns out i didn't use it properly, I thought I also needed to secure the wheels. I really am gutted, it was such a lot of money that we can ill afford. Will investigate fold up bikes but I travel by tube a lot for client meetings carrying laptops etc from the office. Urgh honestly feel so down that these horrible people are walking around with bolt cutters and helping themselves.

If it's any consulation, the thieves will have sold the bike for drug money and will be leading lives of squalor and sickness. They're degraded losers.

Could your household insurance cover the bike and locks?

SuburbanRhonda · 04/01/2014 11:23

Post on Freecycle for an unwanted but functional bike. Or look in the local paper for a cheap one.

tep, thanks for that link, it's brilliant! DS will be cycling to the train station for college next year and wants to use his lovely Specialised bike he got for his birthday. I will now make sure here reads this article first!

MrsSteptoe · 04/01/2014 11:35

DH has had a few great bikes through government and police auctions - a really good one that he wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford, and a cheap one that was even cheaper, IYSWIM - might be a way of getting a replacement at less cost. Just a thought.
