Dry it on you bed? I wrap it in the towel (half towel underneath / half on top).

Pan · 03/01/2014 23:00

Dry as flat as poss eg across a clothes drier and squeeze out the excess water as it collects on sleeves and collars/hem etc. It drains down their fairly quickly and so squeezing means much less weight and pressure to do damage.

StarlightMcKingsThree · 03/01/2014 23:02

I put it in the machine and dryer. If dies, good riddence!

HenriettaMaria · 03/01/2014 23:05

Sometimes I think if you read the label it gives the garment permission to misbehave if you know the instructions and don't follow them

Carefully smoothing out and folding over radiator here in Winter. Carefully smoothing out and folding over line or clothes horse in Spring/Summer. Does bring back memories of jumpers, trousers being placed between towels and covered with rug in front of fire by my Mum in the Seventies. Seemed to be there for ever, but God, were they flat by the time we had all trampled over them for days!

SpinCycle · 03/01/2014 23:21

I used to work in a shop where most of the stock had 'dry flat away from direct sunlight' on the label. I always assumed it was a disclaimer, as the stuff was unwashable, and no normal person would go to such lengths to clean their clothes Grin .

Lying the items flat on a towel and reshaping them, then rolling the towel with them inside and then popping the 'parcel' on the radiator for an hour usually dried them enough so that I could risk finishing them hanging on an airer, though.

*disclaimer - I had 75% employee discount, so wasn't to fussed with the results.Wink

When I read stuff like that my thought is 'fuck that shit'. In the washer then the tumble drier. I'm sure they put stuff like that on there to cover their asses.
I've just washed a throw that said dry clean only.
The only stuff I actually hand wash is wool.

Bollocks to that, hung carefully over two rungs of an airer is the best treatment it can expect here. If it needs more gentle hanging than that I don't buy it, who has time or space for that? Similarly 'dry clean only' (my town doesn't even have a dry cleaner's, only a cobbler's that takes in dry cleaning and lets you collect it three days later) and 'hand wash only' (I don't think so, into the delicates cycle you go).

manicinsomniac · 04/01/2014 02:43

because it pulls it out of shape of course. Wet wool is really heavy. It doesn't have to be flat, flat just not hanging so the weight is dragging it downwards. I lie them across a whole row of the airer so they do sag in a few places but there are enough rungs to spread the weight and it's more or less horizontal iyswim

wobblyweebles · 04/01/2014 02:51

I dry them flat in the laundry room in the basement.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 04/01/2014 02:55

I had two maxi dresses last summer that claimed to need drying flat. Confused They didn't get such treatment.

Wool/cashmere would though probably. You can get special frames to suspend them over the bath.

I don't buy very delicate items if I can possibly help it. They end up being too difficult to wash, so you don't wear them, so what's the point?

QuietNinjaTardis · 04/01/2014 10:09

If something says lie flat I tend to hang it over two rungs of my airer instead of one. Ido have a heated airer now though not Lakeland, aldi! so sometimes it may go across that to keep it flat. Mostly I don't give a shit either though.

eurochick · 04/01/2014 10:12

I've never dried anything flat in my life. I have lots of delicate fabrics (woolens, cashmere, angora, etc). They're all fine draped over the airer to dry. They all last well and look perfect. Ignore.

Wuxiapian · 04/01/2014 10:14

I dry over radiator or clothes horse.

VikingVagine · 04/01/2014 10:15

I never read washing instructions until I hot washed and tumble dried my beautiful cashmere jumper. On the plus side, 4 yo DD looks stunning in it.

Madamecastafiore · 04/01/2014 10:18

Oooohhhh my new 100% viscose dry clean only blouse (is fab for breastfeeding btw from white co) can go in the machine on wool wash then??

Livingtothefull · 04/01/2014 10:24

I don't dry things flat. I give them a good spin to get the weight of water out then spread their weight out over the airer, make sure there are no dangling sleeves etc. It always seems to work OK.

The worst labelling experience I ever had was a white linen shirt..... 'dry clean only'. ????? Maybe because of the buttons etc; anyway it went straight into a hot wash every time never a problem.

Lara2 · 04/01/2014 10:39

Best washing instructions I've had :

"Wash when dirty" - on a t-shirt from the US

"Don't slap pandas " - on another t-shirt

I understand the need to occasionally dry flat, but I am enraged by 'wash separately.'

I also hate it when lazy manufacturers put 'hand wash only' or 'dry clean only' on everything, when the fabric suggests that nothing of the sort should be necessary.

It just makes me think that it must be really shit fabric and shoddy stitching, and they are using it as a cop-out to get out of refunding when they fall apart or shrink.

If I tried to dry something flat in my house it would be covered in cat hair before you could say "shoo" so it never happens. I hardly ever buy handwash only clothes either because I end up never wearing them or just trying to get away with washing them on the delicates setting
