Bloody 'Maisie makes' in BBC Good Food. Smug guff... Angry

Yes, because cooking proper food with your kids is smug and unrealistic, they'll get absolutely nothing out of it and it's by no means a lovely thing that you'll both enjoy doing together. It's also really crap the way the article has reading, measuring etc built into it....

YABU.

I don't think it's "smug guff" at all. DS is too young for the recipes himself but I like their simplicity and could see it being a great way of getting your child involved in the kitchen, giving them some independence, learning about different foods, measuring, and of course the cooking techniques which will set them up for their teens and beyond.

I made the mini toad in the holes a few weeks ago and they were delicious.

Anyone got a link to Maisie Makes or is it on the website? Sounds like something DS would like.

Spot on Spaulding and newname. I've a friend whose DD (8) and DS (6) make better cakes than I do Blush

ikiboo, Maisie's dad (who writes the recipes) is called Barney Desmazery. You could check the Good Food website and see if they're on there? I know the mini toad in the hole one is.

I don't think it's 'smug guff', but I don't see why there needs to be a special article about cooking with children either. Mine just get involved with whatever I'm doing. I give them age appropriate tasks and they just get on with it. It's just a part of family life isn't it?

vestandknickers · 03/01/2014 18:17

Thanks for putting me on to this. Will try some of the recipes with my DD (8) who is an excellent cook. We need some new stuff to try. There are three recipes on the BBC Good Food website.

Why is it smug guff to want to encourage children to learn to cook by the way?

Spaulding · 03/01/2014 18:24

Tailtwister, perhaps GF magazine think it's helpful to provide a section with an easy-to-follow recipe that a child could do. The recipe allows the child to do almost everything from start to finish. I wouldn't expect a 7 year old to follow the magazine's recipe for a hidden heart sponge cake from start to finish for example. This article is just basic roast chicken type stuff or sausages and batter, that they can prepare and cook themselves.

The magazine has a lot of articles that aren't going to relate to everyone. But many do find this section helpful.
