To object to being woken up at 5am for snoring...

Only to be kept awake for half an hour by DP snoring away.

I was fucking livid as I have trouble sleeping, especially going back to sleep after being woken. I have an under active thyroid and even with my medication, I NEED my zzzzs and he knows this. He then had a lie in until 11 am as well, having woken me at 8.

He was really dismissive about it, then we had an argument where he told me I was "mental" and "having a breakdown" for getting worked up about nothing.

To be honest I would have done the same, but you should have woken him up too! You both need your sleep.

Me and DP wake each other up if the other one's snoring. If you're both snorers it's just what happens!

Joysmum · 02/01/2014 20:09

My hubby snores and I spend many nights on the sofa.

If I woke him for snoring then I'd have to accept the same treatment if I snored.

SmileItsANewYear · 02/01/2014 20:10

I can sympathise with this however, it's not like he's doing it on purpose.

LyndaCartersBigPants · 02/01/2014 20:12

Thing is, when he snores I gently stroke his arm or snuggle up behind him. He shook my shoulder so that I was startled awake, which is probably why it was so difficult to go back to sleep.

I actually thought about waking him up too, but didn't want to be petty. He's always falling asleep on the sofa and snores all the time. It used to drive me bonkers when XH snored, but I didn't don't find it so irritating with DP. Obviously this is not reciprocated!

You should have junk punched him. Calling you Mental is a bit of a fucking cheek too.

Next time karate chop him.. in the nutsack.

We both snore... sometimes he wakes me, sometimes I wake him (and fuck do I know about it for about a week afterwards) but its tough luck really.. buy him earplugs next Christmas?

LyndaCartersBigPants · 02/01/2014 20:34

Smile, thing is, I wasn't doing it on purpose either! He woke me up then instantly fell asleep snoring his head off. Bastard.

I get so annoyed as my DP wakes me up every time i start snoring (i tend to breathe through my month so snore even if i've got a slight cold) but yet i put up with him snoring as otherwise neither of us will get to sleep as we will continually just be waking each other up. However he's got mad and had a go at me a couple of times over last few nights so i've said from now on i will wake him up every time he starts snoring, then he'll know what its like

JeanSeberg · 02/01/2014 21:47

Earplugs are your friend. How do you all put up with never getting a full night's sleep?

Mim78 · 02/01/2014 21:50

If you snore and it's keeping the other person awake then you can't object to being woken. It's not their fault if you are snoring and it's absolute torture to lie awake while the other person snorts like a making Rhino.

There are snoring remedies etc out there which you need to at least try so as to avoid disturbing the other person.

However you would have been quite reasonable to have woken him up too when he was snoring.

Mim78 · 02/01/2014 21:50

Oh yes - and ear plugs for both of you are a good idea.

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 02/01/2014 21:59

I always cry in my sleep, DP wakes me up everytime and I'm glad because usually I'm having a nightmare. Oh and I sleep apnea and it scares him. It's a shame. Does result in disrupted sleep though, as well as the snoring.

LyndaCartersBigPants · 02/01/2014 22:03

Trouble is Mim, I used to get really wound up by XH, poking him, nudging, kicking and it never helped. Bought him sprays, strips etc. I spent many nights on the sofa to get away from it.

With DP it hasn't really bothered me, even though it's quite often, on the sofa in the afternoon/evening as well as in bed.

I don't want it to turn into a tit for tat, just don't know why he was so intolerant when he was obviously half asleep anyway. It just seemed quite mean spirited to wake me in such a startling way and then to be horrible when I told him it had pissed me off and that he'd been snoring too!

But Baubles, I bet your DP wakes you nicely, not by shaking you!

OP posts:
DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 02/01/2014 22:10

If I'm screaming he shakes me because he wants to wake me up ASAP but any other time yeah you're right, he's gentle. I get kisses in the morning before my alarm clock goes off Blush which makes me grumble anyway but it's still sweet

If he's being rough, next time wake him up with cold water Wink

Mim78 · 02/01/2014 22:17

Oh yes - I agree that the shaking was a bit mean and that he shouldn't have called you mental etc. That was uncalled for. I would wake the person up more gently. And you are not mental.

I was just concentrating on whether it is fair to wake people who are snoring.

You might be right that he wasn't really being kept awake if he fell asleep again so instantly. I was assuming that he only woke you because he was genuinely suffering and couldn't sleep with the snoring. However, I don't know him - is he likely to wake you at first sign of a snuffle, or would he give it a while like a normal person?

It probably does depend on the loudness/nature of the snoring as to how reasonable it is to wake the other person - I was assuming he did not do it unless it was really keeping him awake.

I don't think the non-snoring partner should have to lie there awake while the other one snores, but he should give it a go first.

With my DH you have to really properly wake him up to get the snoring to stop - he has to turn over and possibly have a drink of water in order to stop it. He does go back to sleep instantly whatever you do - it's just a case of getting whatever causes the snoring to stop. BUT he snores like an absolute orchestra of wild animals - it's loud, it's grating in quality, there is no pattern to the sound so you can't zone it out, and it's never ending. I have heard other snorers at work and they are not as bad as him, so possibly it's impossible to tell if YABU...

Musicaltheatremum · 02/01/2014 22:54

If he's always falling asleep on sofa does he have sleep apnoea? Might be worth getting it looked into.

LyndaCartersBigPants · 02/01/2014 23:10

Think he's just a lazy fuckbag very relaxed, but may be worth a mention, along with some blood tests, as he has other issues which could mean he's a bit anaemic.
