Is there really nothing the medical profession can/should do for it? I've lost 2kg! I can barely do anything, have to stay within proximity of a toilet and feel terrible. Its not improving and smells terrible (sorry TMI).

I phoned NHS 24 last night as GP surgery doesn't open til Friday and was made an appointment at A & E. Didn't see a doctor there, possibly a nurse (I don't know as he didn't introduce himself and I couldn't see a badge, in fact he didn't even respond when I said hello). He was pretty dismissive and rude about NHS 24 sending me there, talked to me as though I was stupid and said it would go away on its own. Told me to see my own GP and was scathing about the point of taking a stool sample as it would take so long to get tested at this time of year, but after prompting for me, did agree to take one.

what have you been eating and drinking in the meantime . Will they send the results to your gp ?

drivingmisspotty · 02/01/2014 08:42

If you look at the NICE guidelines: cks.nice.org.uk/diarrhoea-adults-assessment it tells you what procedure the healthcare professionals you saw should be following. It looks like they don't worry too much until it goes over 14 days (grim!) Unless you have other symptoms. The guy you saw at A And E shouldn't have been so dismissive of you but if it is only diarrhoea and nothing else (although 7 days of it must be agony) he probably thinks it is an acute attack that wil be over by thee time the test results come back. It's probably all your gp would have done too. Really hope you feel better soon.

I feel your pain, I stupidly thought it was a good idea to travel to fez when I was 5 months pregnant. So no lovely imodium for me. I had it for 11 days. My stool sample did not show anything worthy of antibiotics so in the end managed to slow things down by taking a rehydration salt packet with EVERY loose motion. Eergh. And eating two slices of the most processed bunging white bread that money could buy every 2-3 hours. It wasn't pleasent but it worked. Do not eat any dairy until you have been better for at least two days. Good luck.

Have just had hospital treatment for pneumonia and been on antibiotics recently finished. I suspect this has something to do with it.

LIZS I haven't really been eating anything much - maybe a sandwich each day. My stomach is so swollen I don't have any appetite. And the consequences are instant. I just drink water and diarolyte.

Immodium doesn't touch it!

The NICE guidelines on 14 days are reassuring if it is C Diff. Perhaps I will have cured it myself by then by taking some probiotics.

I give my toddler Probiotics when she is constipated as it generally clears her right out. I just thought I might mention that to you. It might be doing the opposite of what you want.

I've had this. It came after a bout of IBS in November and I thought it was just that but the cramps and diarrhoea just went on and on and on. I'm still not fully right now. Christmas was a blast I can tell you! Everything I ate went through me in about 6 minutes.

Fybogel before meals sorted me out in the end, I'm weaning myself off it now. I've lost a stone in weight.

Hope you feel better soon Sad

UriGeller · 02/01/2014 09:44

Oh, I learned the stuff in fybogel is the stuff they use to treat dysentery! Which is what it felt like I had (ugh)

Acidophilus is a high grade probiotic that will build upc your tummy flora.

Peptibismol apparantly stops diarrhoea but the side effect is dark coloured stools for a short period. Try it & see if it's any good.

How awful for you, drink lots of water & flat coke, stay near a loo and buy several packs of moist loo wipes.

wigglesrock · 02/01/2014 10:29

Flat coke - nothing hot, nothing cold, no dairy at all. I stay away from water - I find it quite harsh on my tummy. Sudocreme to ease any discomfort. I hope it eases soon for you, it's horrible.
