To be nonplussed why people rave over Mrs Brown's Boys

I've tried watching it twice twice and haven't got past the first five minutes it was so awful.

It seemed like an artless parody of a shite 70s sitcom (like something Frankie Howerd forgot to make) Don't get me wrong I'm not a comedy snob and quite enjoy a broad knockabout comedy like Vicious, yet I am utterly bemused by Mrs Brown's Boys, it looks dated, absurd and utterly free from laughs.

Yet it has a massive following, especially amongst people of my parents' generation. Normally when there's a TV programme I dislike I can see why other people (Top Gear for example) may enjoy it. But Mrs Brown seems to be without any redeaming features.

There must be some fans out there who can explain its appeal?

I'm Irish. I hate it. It's embarrassing to watch, it's so bad. I'm amazed that it's travelled so well, and that it seems to be so popular in Britain, since the 'humour' in it is very Irish and mostly centred around the cliche of the 'Irish Mammy'.

Mind you I don't understand the attraction of Miranda either . . .

bongobaby · 01/01/2014 13:25

I don't find it funny either, but a friend of mine and her daughter does. The daughter had the box set of it brought for her 8th birthday from her mum. I defiantly wouldn't buy it on DVD, waste of money.

JimmyChooChoo · 01/01/2014 13:26

Bunny I did mean out (oops!)

And what does a 'high IQ' have to do with comedy?

I honestly think if you can't laugh while watching Mrs Brown you MUST be VERY boring.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 13:26

I know someone who bought her 8 year-old son the box set of The Royal Family!

Fairylea · 01/01/2014 13:27

I absolutely hate it. I really don't see what all the fuss is about!

pictish · 01/01/2014 13:27

It's utter bollocks isn't it? Only seen one and that was enough...dh and I were looking at each other with Confused faces.
Shite.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 13:27

So if you don't find one comedy show funny, you must be boring?

Despite the fact that I love stand-up comedians and many other comedy shows?

Don't be childish Jimmy - it's boring.

threepiecesuite · 01/01/2014 13:28

I think it is utter shite too. Not remotely funny and so dated.

BananaNotPeelingWell · 01/01/2014 13:29

I also don't find it funny. It just leaves me cold. A bloke in a dressConfused- that's been done to death now surely. It could be funnier if it came over as a parody of the 70's sketch type of shows I remember, but it's more of a carbon copyConfused

Lizzylou · 01/01/2014 13:30

God it is beyond shite.

JimmyChooChoo · 01/01/2014 13:35

Heartbroken - when did I say if you didn't fund ONE comedy show funny you must be boring ?? (Rolls eyes)

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 13:37

Jimmy, erm that would be when you said this:

I honestly think if you can't laugh while watching Mrs Brown you MUST be VERY boring.

I don't laugh at Mrs Brown's Boys, so that makes me boring?

If you meant something else by it, please explain, but it seems quite a straightforward statement to me.

So, I'm not a bore, but I am a bore?

Interesting.

At least I can back up my statements, rather than saying I didn't say them.

Annoying little trait, isn't it?

Nancy66 · 01/01/2014 13:43

People like different things, no point falling out over it.

Royle Family one of my fave comedies ever but I have friends who don't get that either and say 'it's just people sitting on a sofa and watching telly, why's that funny?'

Horses, courses and all that.

BananaNotPeelingWell · 01/01/2014 13:44

Blimey Jimmy steady on. You're not actually Mrs Brown are you?

Brokenpurpleheart · 01/01/2014 13:44

Older generation love it for its similarity to 70s sitcoms and kids love it (yep the teens at my school) as it is rude. As someone in the middle I have mixed feelings - it is cringeworthy but parts of it make me laugh as it is so daft. I really like that they keep the bits in where they go wrong .... the world would be a very boring place if we all liked the same things!

JimmyChooChoo · 01/01/2014 13:45

Heartbroken - genuine question: what do you find funny?

FudgefaceMcZ · 01/01/2014 13:45

It's utter shite. Not anywhere near Father ted, wtf with that comparison? I am pissed right off that I missed the christmas Limmy though and it's not on iplayer, I probably don't have massive comedy taste.

mrsminiverscharlady · 01/01/2014 13:46

I don't find it funny in the slightest but humour is often inexplicable isn't it? I don't judge people by what they find funny (unless actually offensive) or unfunny.

SirChenjin · 01/01/2014 13:46

Add me to the list of boring people who don't give a shit what Jimmy thinks because Mrs Browns Boys is a load of crap. Anyone who finds it funny is stuck somewhere c1982 and has probably inhaled too much of the hairspray required to keep their perm in place.

BlingBang · 01/01/2014 13:46

It really, really irritates me, but many others seem to think it's the funniest thing.
