To be pissed off with DP re car seat issue (hormone fuelled rant!)

Baby is due next month and last week we found a good travel system deal in Mothercare that included the car seat, isofix base etc.
The shop assistant asked if we wanted to try it in our car before we bought it to check it fitted. I said yes, DP was adamant that it would fit. As he's the only one that drives, I thought fine.
Got it home and yesterday DP fitted it on his side. It didn't fit properly and meant he has to have his seat pulled right forward, and he can't drive properly with it behind him but he's very tall so we assumed it was his long legs and said we'd try it on my side today.
Just fitted it on my side and the same issue - I have to have my seat pulled right forward so my legs are shoved right up against the glovebox.
AIBU to be pissed off that he wouldn't just let the shop assistant see if the fucking car seat fit comfortably before we bought the damn thing?

Mine is a the same car seat and fits fine in any car I've tried although I don't have isofix so I think that might be the problem.

It even fit in a fiat punto although getting it into the back was a tricky manoeuvre and it went in at a very odd angle

Another recommendation for a Maxi Cosi Pebble with isofix base in a Polo - the passenger seat does have to be slightly more forward but not excessively so. Also as it's a group 0+ seat they last for ages - DS is 22 months (50 centile for weight 75 centile for height so not tiny) and has only just grown out of it!

Also it's safer to have the seat behind the passenger seat not the driver.

SunnyRandall · 01/01/2014 08:20

Can you put the seat behind the passenger seat and you sit in the back behind the driver? I liked to sit next to my dc when they were tiny anyway in case of sick/crying/ just so I could admire them Blush

Our council has a road safety department and they will check car seats for you. Try giving them a call.

YANBU

I nagged DP for ages about getting our one fitted, 'we had plenty of time to check' I was 7 months pg when we bought it.

We were told once we opened a certain part of it, it would become non returnable. I was full of anxiety that it wouldn't fit and we'd accidently open this part. Luckily for dp it did fit, but he still took about 20 minutes putting it in when we were taking lo home from hospital.

Hope you can get it exchanged.

We had a similar problem. In the end we ended up putting it behind the front passenger seat and dh would sit next to ds behind me driving. Not idea but worked until we could get a bigger car! (To be honest one of us always ended up next to ds anyway as he hated sitting on his own in the back).

As a poster above said I had a rear facing car seat in the back of a Fiat 500 so a VW Polo should be fine. You just have to get used to feeling a bit squished as a passenger. Could you not just sit in the back next to baby? That's what I did if it was just me, DH and DS.

Sorry cross post!

You can put it in the front seat if you turn the airbag off (however, I don't know if newer Polos have that function - our Touran does).

My ancient Polo fits a Graco seat in the back but only if the seat in front is moved right forward - in a Polo you may have this problem with other brands as it is a small car.

While you are at it , check the pram goes into the boot - nearly got caught out on that one!

natwebb79 · 01/01/2014 08:51

Good point on the buggy and boot situation - I had to have a Baby Jogger City Mini for my tiny boot. Luckily I loved it.

Twinkletron · 01/01/2014 08:53

Where did you buy it? Because toys r us won't take back a car seat/isofix unless faulty once opened (health & safety)- especially if they offered to see if it fitted.

YANBU. That would be beoynd the threshold of my 8m pg hormones. If he'd have been patient, the problem could have been avoided.

I have the same seat without isofix (that's come in since DS 1 was born, but my car doesn't have isofix anyway). It may be a bit better without the base.

Seatbelt only needs a bit more care, but when done properly is perfectly safe. I've never missed isofix and rarely take the car seat out as DS1 and 2 would wake as soon as they hit fresh air anyway. I've only taken it out for DS2 to sit poolside at DS1s swimming lesson. Now he can sit in a play pen, I've stopped doing it as it's so heavy to lug- heavier than dangling a 3 year old at the end of my arm would be, and being carried around like that can't do the seat any favours.

It lasted DS1 until he was 13m and he has a long body.

Going off on a tangent, SC themselves have great customer service. They fixed my pram for free after it was out of warenty between DSs (I've had my money's worth from it) and have been quick to have emails back regarding the fit in DH's new car.
