To cry whilst watching Shirley Valentine...

..because now that I am almost her age (42), my life has turned into her mundane, depressing, non-eventful existence. I've lost my identity and can't see it ever changing. Anyway, it's funny how you can watch something 10 years ago and not have any connection but now, I could actually be Shirley (talking to myself and feeling how she feels).
Am I the only one?

I watched this film again in August, just a few weeks before I went on a girly few days away to Spain with a friend. I have been a mother since I was 20 years old and have never been away with a friend, always having responsibility. I am in my mid 40's now and the film plus the holiday was a wake up call for me. Be kind to yourself, get a haircut, wear nail polish occasionally, don't keep your clothes for "best". Go to an art gallery, sit with a magazine in a coffee shop and read every page. We all need a break sometimes.

Snap , been a mother since I was 17 , kids are now 18/16 and 5 . That Island , the escapism , I would in a such a selfish way love to have known who I might have been .

Sitting with a grumpy post argument OH doesn't help.

Liking the advice given

They showed it at the right time of year. I can see a few people who have watched that making a few drastic changes in the New Year Grin

I too wept a little watching it last night. I love Greece soooo much, and it made me ache to be on the beach in Lindos!

Also because I genuinely don't think that if I did a Shirley, my DH wouldn't notice I had gone until he ran out of clean pants!

Gucci what a lovely post. It brought a tear to my eye. Especially not keeping clothes for best and getting a haircut!! I taped this a few nights ago and I'm going to watch it right now!

btw the I'm only 33 with 2 girls under 5 but I still understand!

I really don't think I could watch it now.

Naturally, I laughed like a drain when I first saw it when I was about 15yrs old. Clearly, I was never going to become a boring middle aged fart.

I think that all women who feel like they're stuck in a bit of a rut and lost their identity a little bit or a lot should watch it again. If only to identify with Shirley and realise that you change things.

I watched it this week and cried. My baby is only 1 but the sheer loneliness pouring out if that film made me sob.
