Talking of the IRA they apparently we're responsible for the brutal death of my great uncle years before dm was born. A bit of family tree researching found he died when dm was 5 of fairly natural but certainly not man made causes... My family and their tales never cease to baffle me Hmm

My uncles new wife's mum threw herself down the stairs when she found out she was pregnant with her. Thankfully neither died!! But she has always favoured her other daughter who's a bit of a slut in her 40s. Sure I've got more...

My dad came back from a work trip to Saudi years ago with second degree burns on his feet. He spent months in and out of hospital, needed skin grafts and everything. He told people a waiter had tipped a jug of boiling water all over him at a restaurant, for which he got much sympathy from family/friends/work. His boss even sent him a really expensive bottle of whiskey as a sort of apology as it was a 'work' injury.

The truth was, on his last day there he fancied a skive...so he missed a meeting, went up to the sun terrace and fell asleep under a sun umbrella. For FOUR hours. In August. With his feet poking out of the end Grin

According to my Granddad he had an affair with Mary Martin, Larry Hagman's mother so I could be JR Ewing's niece. Grin

I found out age 26 that my dad isn't biologically my dad. That was a shock.

However I now have a network of extra siblings, nieces & nephews that I am getting to know.

My great uncle was in the SS, although not sure how close he was to the inner circle. My grandad never talked about it. He also fought in WW2 on the 'wrong' side . I would have loved to know more about that side of the family.

My grandfather was a founding member of the IRA. I don't tell people that for obvious reasons, but secretly I'm very proud, as they were just brave men fighting back against cruelty. My grandfather would have been devastated had he known anything about the terrorist atrocities they committed in later years.

My DH has no idea that I've been to three MNet pissups meet-ups Grin

My Dad shot an Italian POW in the arse with an air rifle. POW was working on the land, Dad was about 12 at the time - he never got caught, and I don;t think he did much damage ;)

I once went salmon poaching with someone who is now a very famous actor :) We didn't catch anything - but we could have!

My Great Grand father was in the British Army, and used to march up and down in his British Army uniform in 1950's Dublin - bit of a dirty secret in an Irish family! The local kids were afraid of him too. He once grounded my nana for a month and beat her black and blue (when she was 18) because she said "Hiya Da" and not "Hello Father" out on the street. He was a bit of a horror story!

ashamedoverthinker · 29/12/2013 19:43

I have a half sister I have never met

Blushingm · 29/12/2013 19:43

Dh nan went to jail for 6 months for shop lifting bread

Her husband died at 32 leaving her with 6 young children, no job and no welfare state........the children didn't know but were split between relatives til she got out

I though it was sad the family helped look after the kids but let her get so desperate she had to resort to stealing bread

Cousin was killed by firing squad for drug smuggling. Family told everyone he died in a plane crash.

Found out that an uncle was a freemason, and his wife was part of a witches' coven. She knew he was a freemason, but he didn't know she was a witch.

Recently found out that two lovely aunties, both now dead, were enthusiastic part -time call-girls/prostitutes/sex workers during the war and for some time afterwards.

One ran a pub in Wales while her husband was in the eighth Army in Africa, she took the pub's takings and cleared off with an American serviceman for a few weeks. She and her sister regularly entertained troops and after the war would go to docks and ports to meet sailors from around the world.

Apparently there were a few women who did this from their area, most were married but came from very matriarchal society where the men were pretty much under the thumb, according to a cousins description. The aunties did not ply their trade locally, and did it into their forties. Both married and had families, I remember them as lovely old dears..if I'd only known !
