Made the stupid mistake of being friends with my mother on facebook- and its caused a massive argument as she has called me 3 times to tell me that she doesnt think I should be saying this, that or the other and is hyper critical. I have, as a result, deleted her! AIBU?

By the way, I am 43 and she told me off for swearing on there ffs!

Not at all. It's a SOCIAL network, if people are being antisocial, block their asses! You can always feign technophobia about "why it's done that..?" Wink

PigsInTinselToppedWellies · 29/12/2013 17:15

YABU I have my mum as a friend on facebook and if I have to endure it so should everyone else. My mum stalks me. She 'likes' every comment I make even when I write them in a language she doesn't understand. Every bloody day there's like 200 gazzillion notifications and they're all her.

mrspremise · 29/12/2013 17:16

Make sure that she isn't still 'subscribed' to your posts, or she'll still be able to see them and carry on with the PA nonsense

HappTeeNewYear · 29/12/2013 17:17

My mother and I have an agreement: What is said on FB, stays on FB.

Otherwise, YANBU

mrssmith79 · 29/12/2013 17:17

Change your profile settings so she's restricted in what she can see. Don't unfriend her - more hassle than it's worth (speaks the voice of experience).

ContinentalKat · 29/12/2013 17:19

This is exactly why I keep telling my parents that fb is "far too technical" for them Grin

westbest · 29/12/2013 17:19

Even if she said, and I quote "you werent brought up to swear"....I am seething!

BunnyLebowski · 29/12/2013 17:21

My dad is not on FB but still got a 'people you may know so sign up' email that named me.

He rang me up (I was 31) to tell me off for my middle name on FB. Which was Sugartits.

Blush Blush Grin Mortified doesn't even begin to cover it!

BananaNotPeelingWell · 29/12/2013 17:23

Omg this is exactly why I steer well away from FB at all. Not that my parents would be likely to use it anyway. But inlaws might. Who needs all the angst of 'blocking' people and tying to explain why when you see them in rl?Hmm Not me.

HappTeeNewYear · 29/12/2013 17:29

There is no angst Banana. They never know they are blocked or hidden.

Fugacity · 29/12/2013 17:34

What's the upside of swearing on Facebook?

HappTeeNewYear · 29/12/2013 17:35

What's the downside of swearing on Facebook?

SilverApples · 29/12/2013 17:36

I'm on my children's FB, if I behaved like that, they'd unfriend me.

westbest · 29/12/2013 17:38

I dont regularly swear on FB! It was a one off that she saw. But its more about feeling scrutinised at age 43 by my mother. If I want to swear, I can! I am 43!!

DDad isn't on my restricted list, it's my DSis! Earlier this year, I wanted to unfriend her, but it was pointed out that would cause more trouble than it was worth with her, if she found out.

DDad, on the other hand, has never been a problem on Facebook Grin

Its0kToBeMe · 29/12/2013 17:50

My mum is great fun on FB, I did have to unfriend my DB though as he had daily updated on how great the nazi's are and how he's 'proddy and proud'

HereIsMee · 29/12/2013 17:58

Aren't you allowed to have friends groups and so you can filter your posts. However there's not a lot you can do about your profile as I think Sugartits has demonstrated. Grin

MadeOfStarDust · 29/12/2013 18:01

Yep - create different groups for different people and post accordingly - I don't want family/friends/work colleagues/boss/kids friends parents etc.... mixing..

my "wall" is inane day to day stuff, the groups are somewhat different...

FracturedViewOfLife · 29/12/2013 18:04

My mum (and dad, grandma, cousins, aunties and little brothers) added me a couple of years ago. I couldn't say no. My Facebook got very boring and I barely use it now.

Kikithecat · 29/12/2013 18:10

For once I'm glad my DM and DMil are too ancient to be doing with the interweb!

TheBigJessie · 29/12/2013 18:19
