to not put my dog on his lead when asked?

Was walking the dog with my dc today, they'd stopped on a bench on a hill and were chatting about the view with our dog laying down under the bench without his lead on. A woman came round the corner with a larger dog and shouted: 'leash your dog! Mine doesn't like small ones.' Our dog is obedient, not to mention old and uninterested in other dogs, hers was off its lead. Her tone irritated me as it was as though my dog was doing something wrong when he hadn't moved, so I said pardon? She said: 'put your dogs lead on now! Mine doesn't like small dogs and could attack.' I said that if her dog is aggressive it shouldn't be off its lead, particularly in a family park. Her dog was nowhere near our dog or the dc and I wasn't sure it'd actually noticed our dog so I didn't want to draw attention to him by putting his lead on and entice it towards the dc. She stormed off after her dog muttering about how rude I was. Wibu?

My dog can be iffy with other dogs, so I lead him as soon as I spot an unknown dog. If the other dog approaches, I call over to the other owner that my dog isn't always friendly. I would never leave my dog loose and expect the other owner to lead their dog. My dog is the unsociable bastard. She sounds a tad entitled.

Adeleh · 29/12/2013 00:02

YANBU. She sounds off her rocker.

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/12/2013 00:10

Yanbu.

If you know your dog is aggressive then it should never be off lead.

Where I live "on lead/off lead" areas don't exist, dogs can be off lead anywhere (except within children's play areas at parks).

superlambanana · 29/12/2013 00:20

In that case she was definitely BU. Dog owners who give the rest of us a bad name make me Angry

mathanxiety · 29/12/2013 03:48

All dogs should be on leads at all times. I live in a built up area where all dogs have to be on leads if out. There are enclosed dog parks where they can frolic about and socialise. It works for everyone.

SoWhatDoWeDoNow · 29/12/2013 03:54

Gawd, what an entitled arse, and a total fruit loop.

Her, not you.

If her dog has been leashed then I would have leashed mine out of courtesy, even if I felt it unnecessary. Although I would have been irritated by her tone.

However, where she gets off telling others their dog must be leashed while her dog is not, I have no idea. Hmm

perfectstorm · 29/12/2013 04:07

She has a dog which "could attack" yet she lets it off the lead? And suggests the potential victims should be leashed instead? Confused On what planet does that follow? A dog you can't trust needs a soft muzzle and a lead - not the gentle, well-socialised ones.

She's insane. Poor dog, it never had a hope in hell with an owner like that.

MaitlandGirl · 29/12/2013 07:24

It's owners like her that have me walking my dogs at dawn. The dog beach on a Saturday lunch time is awful and my dogs like to be able to run properly and chase the waves so we go when the only people out are 'proper dog owners' who understand about leashing a dodgy dog.

I always judge by whether the other dog is on a lead or not - if it is mine go straight on, if not I call out to the owner to check theirs is ok with other dogs. We've only once had a problem when my papillon scared a Great Dane by running at it straight out of the sea. Don't think the other dog had ever seen anything that looked quite like a drowned rat barking before!

RudolphtheRedknowsraindear · 29/12/2013 07:34

YANBU, her aggressive dog should have been on a lead & muzzled.........from the sounds of it, so should she!

BMW6 · 29/12/2013 07:37

Idiotic - her, not you!

SaveMeTheLastGreenTriangle · 29/12/2013 08:00

My dog doesn't like other dogs much. I put him on his lead when we see another dog, but it doesn't seem to stop some owners from letting their dogs run over and bother him :(

Ghanagirl · 29/12/2013 08:01

It's dog owners like that make taking small children to parks a complete nightmareConfused

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/12/2013 08:15

Yanbu. If her dog has a problem with other dogs he should be the one on the lead.

Your old ,uninterested, well behaved dog sounds ferocious and a danger Hmm

drivingmisslazy · 29/12/2013 08:22

My dog has a habit of being unpredictable around smaller dogs that yap in her face, so I keep my dog on an retractable lead and when I see another smaller dog approaching I keep the lead short, I would never dream of asking another dog owner to lease their dog if mine was off lead.

Crazy women.

digerd · 29/12/2013 08:50

My little dog is non-reactive and non-aggressive, but I always have her on an extendable lead as she is also non- recallable and very inquisitive. I do that for her safety and my peace of mind.
That woman was being ridiculous - her dog is small dog aggressive so he is left off the lead and the others must be leashedConfused.

Wuxiapian · 29/12/2013 08:59

You say your dog was on it's lead then at the end, you didn't want to draw attention by putting his lead on. The which one was it?

DejaVuAllOverAgain · 29/12/2013 09:26

The OP said her dog was lying under the bench without its lead on.

YANBU It's her dog that should be on the lead if it's likely to attack small dogs.

diddl · 29/12/2013 09:48

What a peculiar woman!

When I walk the dog I take the lead off at a particular point in the walk.

Once a woman behind me with a big dog that she couldn't handle was shouting-"can you let your dog off please?", as her dog was pulling towards us.

But really, that's the time that you don't want to!

It's always a worry when an owner is just about being dragged by the dog in it's desperation to get to your dog!

Wuxiapian · 29/12/2013 11:50

Ah, deja, I misunderstood.

OP, YANBU. Her dog should have been on it's leash if it likely to attack other dogs!

Wuxiapian · 29/12/2013 11:50

Ah, deja, I misunderstood.

OP, YANBU. Her dog should have been on it's leash if it likely to attack other dogs!

GogoGobo · 29/12/2013 13:31

YANBU.

HandbagCrazy · 29/12/2013 14:27

I have a dog that is unpredictable with other dogs and another who is great with them. The unpredictable one is muzzled when off lead and goes straight on a lead when we see another dog. The great dog is off lead most of the time but if we see a dog with a lead on, we put his on too. It's just polite. That woman is completely irresponsible - her dog should be on a lead and possibly muzzled if it is known for attacking!!

LaGuardia · 29/12/2013 14:37

All dogs should be leashed. Vile shitting creatures.

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/12/2013 14:54

There's always one.
