To descend to new levels of evil parenting ... and buy ds thermal underwear

Ds refuses to wear a coat to school or a pullover. He has just started secondary school and most of his friends are equally as stupid when it comes to dressing for winter.

I have told him that in January he will either wear a coat or be sent to school in thermal underwear. If he "loses" his coat then he will wear thermal underwear under his school blazer.

i think you can get really nice thermals now? thinking uni clo or something...my dh had a white long sleeved one from tesco and it actually looked really attractive!

on the other hand, they wont freeze, children move round so much more tan us and and schools are usually hot.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 28/12/2013 21:38

It depends.

Are you making him wear thermal underwear to make a point, or to keep him warm?

If it's the latter, then you can buy short-sleeved and sleeveless base layers that are just as warm and are also socially acceptable. DS1 (Y9) and several of his rugby mates wear them.

He won't be alone. Dn wears his rugby thermals under his school shirt and blazer, as do all the rugby team.

AChickenCalledKorma · 28/12/2013 21:41

Depends if he's actually getting cold, really.

I would love DD to wear a coat to secondary, but her locker space is so small that she'd prefer to stick to blazer and umbrella. She has a jumper. She probably won't actually die of cold, so I reckon I'll leave her to it. She's old enough to understand the link between coats and warmth - and to decide whether it matters or not.

Having said which, she would probably be quite happy to stick a layer on under her shirt, so by all means buy some so he's got it ready if/when he needs it.

marmitecat · 28/12/2013 21:41

My two ds both have long sleeved thermal vests and they wear them at every opportunity. Just look like tight long sleeve tops. They love them. Lots of sporty kids wear thermals.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/12/2013 21:44

I have exactly the same with 14yo DS
He won't wear a jumper or a coat (unless I sew him into the blardy thing, then it gets left in the locker )

On the Christmas Jumper Day I made him wear a long sleeved thermal top (Costco, navy blue, very nice)

He came home, jumper in his bag, wearing his thermal top. In December .

I usually give him a short sleeved white t-shirt to go under the school shirt.

noblegiraffe · 28/12/2013 21:45

Most secondary kids wear a long-sleeved t-shirt or similar under their shirt rather than be seen dead in a coat. Thermals will probably be acceptable!

Joysmum · 28/12/2013 21:47

My dd in year 7 is the same.

I figure she's old enough to live with the consequences own mistakes now on something that simple.

foreverondiet · 28/12/2013 21:47

I think that if he is in secondary school then its up to him.

What do you think will happen to him if he doesn't wear a coat?

Confused....

FredFredGeorge · 28/12/2013 21:47

When will you stop dictating how warm he has to be? At some point its his decision? Why not at 11?

Why do you think him overheating during lessons is better than him being a bit chilly on the walk to school when he can easily keep warm by moving more?

littlewhitechristmasbag · 28/12/2013 21:49

My DD2 (16) wears a blazer but coats are not regulation uniform. She wears a thermal vest under her shirt when it is very cold. I think this is quite common.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 28/12/2013 21:52

I must admit that I would not want to be lugging a coat around all day at school. Not all pupils have lockers which are close enough or secure enough to be useful.

Mellowandfruitful · 28/12/2013 21:53

FredFredGeorge surely he won't overheat during lessons because he will take it off? In fact I would expect he has to take it off - has been the rule in all schools I'm familiar with...

octopusinasantasack · 28/12/2013 21:53

Good luck with that one.....

Fakebook · 28/12/2013 21:53

I remember holding my coat in my hand to school on cold winter mornings. Wearing a coat is not cool. I managed to survive up until now. I didn't actually start wearing layers of warm tops and leggings under trousers until about 3 years ago aged 27.

Let your DS be. He'll be fine.

Annunziata · 28/12/2013 21:54

You'd have to wrestle him into them Grin

Mellowandfruitful · 28/12/2013 21:56

I lugged around (or wore Xmas Smile) a coat around all day at school because there were no lockers. Can't see why this is so much of a burden!

OP I think YANBU but I can see I'm in the minority...

my 15 yr old seems to be the odd one out in her school she wears coat hat gloves and scarf to school she cant stand being cold and she is even looking at thermals for walking down after the holidays my dd is not cool, Grin I know they hate wearing coats as they have to carry them around (dd does not care ) but it is up to us to keep them warm I do think some thermal drawers will keep him cosy Wink

ArgumentsatChristmas · 28/12/2013 21:59

:) I have this battle with both my DCs. It's a losing battle. Buy the underwear by all means but expect it never to be worn. He would die of shame in the changing rooms. When it is really properly cold and snowing, they'll wear coats.

FredFredGeorge · 28/12/2013 21:59

MellowAndFruitful How do you take thermal underwear off at school?

curlew · 28/12/2013 22:00

My ds wears a shirt and blazer to school regardless of the weather. But he takes thermals with him to out on under sports kit for rugby and football training.

if he wants to freeze on the way to school that's his problem. It won't do him any harm.

IloveJudgeJudy · 29/12/2013 11:27

The voice of experience here says you can buy the thermal underwear, but you can't make them wear it. If he's got a coat and chooses not to wear it, surely it's up to him if he's at secondary. We have the same problem here with where to put the coat if you've worn it to school. The lockers are titchy and there are no cloakrooms so DC have to carry them around with them all day. Can't put them on the back of their chair so they get in the way.

Don't worry. He won't freeze.

lljkk · 29/12/2013 11:35

How do you wrestle a 9 stone teenager into unwanted thermals?
