AIBU to think that it's not my problem if the taxi arrives early?

I booked a taxi earlier, and booked it for 12. I deliberately booked it at that time so I could take the dog for a quick walk, and have a coffee before it arrived.

The taxi arrived early,at 11:40,not long after I called to arrange it. I went out and told the driver that he was early, and that I'd be with him ASAP,but I needed to take the dog for a very quick walk first,so would be 5 or so minutes.

He said that he'd have to charge a fee for waiting, and that he wasn't told 12 but to get there ASAP. I said there must have been a mistake, and that I wouldn't be paying a fee,as I'd asked for a taxi at 12,and would be as quick as possible. He still insisted that I'd have to pay a fee,so I told him to forget it,and that I'd arrange another,so he did, with him complaining about time wasters.

So AIBU to think that if a taxi arrives long before I requested it,that I shouldn't have to pay a fee?

Apologies for the long and boring post.

yanbu, whether he was told or not is not your problem!

FeastOfPhteven · 28/12/2013 14:47

YANBU! If he was 5 minutes you would be, but 20 minutes is ridiculous!

CeliaLytton · 28/12/2013 14:47

YANBU. If he really wasn't told 12 he should be bring it up with dispatch. Not your problem.

RabbitPies · 28/12/2013 14:54

If he was 5 minutes early I would have been ready for him. I was only taking the dog across to the woods ,which are literally across the street,to pee, and, grudgingly, forgoing my coffee, but apparently he couldn't even wait that long without charging me a waiting fee.

I would have told him to go then called the company again and booked one for 12 and made sure they understood that you would be paying no waiting fee. That is ridiculous.

I work supply. I went somewhere to work the other week only to be told they had cancelled me. My work pimp had forgotten to tell me. It wasn't the fault of me or where I turned up to. It was entirely my pimp's fault. (She did pay me, but it was still a day wasted, and I had to get up really early)

The taxi driver was right to be upset, but he should have been upset with his office.

Laquitar · 28/12/2013 15:04

Yanbu
I dont think it was mistake. He was trying to 'fill' his time, to do your job and then be free at 12.30 to do another job. Less gaps between jobs , more money.
But thats not your problem.

DameDeepRedBetty · 28/12/2013 15:04

Is pimp really the right word for teacher supply agency?

PuppyMonkey · 28/12/2013 15:08

Pimp Grin

The taxi company I sometimes use is usually good with arriving for when I ask but I booked a taxi xmas eve for my friend to get home from our night out. She lives a 20-30 min drive away so I asked for it to come in 20 mins for the time we'd be ready for it. 5 mins later the driver phoned me saying if she didn't come now he'd drive off. Because of how late it was she just went and got the taxi. I think it's them BU

RabbitPies · 28/12/2013 15:17

I did tell him to go,but I called another taxi company instead. In hindsight I probably should have called the same one,and explained to them why I was requesting another, but I'm very reluctant, perhaps overly so, to make a complaint about anyone, unless their customer service/attitude was really terrible.

You should have rang them back and explained why. You could get blacklisted from that taxi company, and for doing nothing wrong at all.

umiaisha · 28/12/2013 15:21

This infuriates me. The last time it happened we were being picked up to go to the airport and the driver turned up over half an hour early and go all stroppy and impatient with me. Needless to say he did not get a tip..

TiggyD · 28/12/2013 19:22

Maybe pimp is the wrong word. What's the name for somebody who finds you clients, tells you what to wear, sends you to do whatever the client wants for however many hours, then takes half your money when you finish?

ImperialBlether · 28/12/2013 19:30

Pimp.

RedHelenB · 28/12/2013 19:55

You got paid for a days supply that you didn't do? I'd have been thinking bonus!

TiggyD · 28/12/2013 20:03

I got paid for the minimum hour I have to be paid for. Take away cost of fuel, and bear in mind I might have had a full days work somewhere else...

I think I made about £2 that day.

RedHelenB · 28/12/2013 20:13

Not so good then!
