To want to take on a renovation project that will take years to complete?

It is a huge project and we will have to do it in stages but it is (or will be!) a beautiful property in a lovely location and it ticks lots of our 'dream house' boxes aside from it needing so much work! I've completely fallen in love with it. DH isn't completely against the idea but he's being realistic about the time, effort and money it is going to cost - although he loves the idea of what it will be when it is finished. What do you think? Crazy? Worth it all in the end or better to just buy a finished house?

If you and DH are planning to do some of the work, you will hardly have any family time for many years to come. No days out etc.
It can destroy relationships.

All hobbies will have to go.

The whole house will be covered in plaster dust for years, it will be in /on your clothes however well you try to protect them.

It could become depressing living in such an unfinished 'mess'.

You could become resentful of the house.

It will take three times longer and cost three times more than you plan for.

If you have unlimited budget for builders, plumbers, decorators it will be great.
If you are planning to do lots yourselves not quite so great.

Two kids - ages nearly 8 and 5. We will probably not do too much of the work ourselves - or at least most of the major work would be done before we move in - ideally! Thank you for all your replies. We had another look at it today and it would be a HUGE project. We're still mulling it over for now. I'm not sure how much interest there will be in it. It certainly doesn't look like a good investment/redevelopment opportunity - it would have to be someone wanting it for their own house and there is a lot of work involved to make it that.
